Job Title: Certified Tree Pruner

Should there be no fully qualified candidate for this position, a less qualified candidate who can be expected to meet the required qualifications within a reasonable period may be considered for this position as a training/development opportunity.

Hours of Work: 80 hours bi-weekly

Shift Work Required: Yes

Rate of Pay: $32.64 per hour
(Training Opportunity rate of pay is $31.01 per hour. The successful candidate will be paid at the reduced rate until the minimum qualifications have been met.)

Initial Reporting Location: Frobisher (Citywide)

Section: Roads Operations
Division: Linear Infrastructure Services
Department: Growth and Infrastructure

Duties: Under the supervision of a Citywide Superintendent, with the day-to-day direction of the Tree Warden.

1. Prune trees for contracted Hydro work in close proximity to energized lines.

2. Climb trees using ladders, safety ropes, belts and spurs.

3. Clear deadwood, remove overhanging branches, clear branches from Hydro lines, etc. using saws and pruners.

4. Treat damaged or diseased trees.

5. Secure split joints.

6. Spray trees with insecticides using sprayer.

7. Cut and remove roots and stumps manually and with motorized stumper.

8. Remove fallen trees from roads.

9. Plant and nurture trees.

10. Clean up job sites of all debris, load large branches into truck and feed smaller branches into chipper machine.

11. Sharpen saws, minor repairs and clean tools.

12. Operate and drive a bucket truck.

13. Develop and maintain a thorough working knowledge of CGS's Safety Manual and the applicable Provincial Legislation listed therein.

14. Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications:
  • Successful completion of Secondary School (Grade XII) Education.
  • Must hold and maintain certification as a Utility Arborist (444B) through the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities.
  • Three (3) years of experience in trimming trees around live conductors.
  • Aerial Rescue training considered an asset.
  • Must comply with applicable Provincial Standards and Acts.
  • Be able to identify species of trees in order to prune correctly.
  • Proven dependability to work without direct supervision in a team environment.
  • Excellent use of English; verbally and in writing.
  • Satisfactory health, attendance and former employment history.
  • May require the use of a CGS vehicle on CGS business. Must be physically capable of operating a vehicle safely, possess a valid Class “DZ” driver's licence and have an acceptable driving record.
