JOB DESCRIPTION:

HR Project Partners is currently accepting resumes for a Civil Construction Superintendent on behalf of one of our clients. The ideal candidate would have experience in Civil Discipline, or Technologist with significant experience in earthworks.

This position is in Grand Falls-Windsor, NL working on a 1 week in/1 week out rotation. The duration of this position is full-time, permanent.

Marathon Gold Corporation (“Marathon” or the “Company”) is engaged in the exploration and development of the Valentine Gold Project (the “Project”) located in the central region of Newfoundland. Early works started in October 2022 and construction commencing in January 2023 with the first gold production at the end of 2024. Once in production, it will be the largest gold mine in Atlantic Canada and a major employer in the province. Marathon is a public corporation (TSX: MOZ) headquartered in Toronto, Ontario with a regional office located in Grand
Falls-Windsor, NL.

Marathon is currently inviting applications for a Civil Construction Superintendent to join our growing team to construct the mine and transition to mine operations.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Ensure that effective Health, Safety and Environmental procedures, government regulations and Marathon Gold NL standard operating procedures (SOPs) are being implemented and followed.
  • Always establish and promote a respectful and healthy work environment.
  • Assist in plan and spec analysis to provide clear, trackable, and coordinated interpretations of the design/drawings for construction.
  • Research and recommend solutions to design document problems, including conflicts, interferences, and errors/omissions.
  • Act as liaison with subcontractors in expediting drawings and related information.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date logs (RFI, Vendor/Subcontractor, Purchase, Owner etc.), track responses and advise the Construction Manager of the status of RFIS.
  • Maintain and update the Shop Drawing Log, review Shop Drawings and submittals.
  • Coordinate submittals and procure all close-out documents including warranties and Operating and Maintenance Manuals.
  • Monitor field work, including contract work, to ensure compliance with company standards, procedures, specifications, and codes.
  • Participate in the continuous updating and accurate generation of as-built documents.
  • Assist with the research and preparation of field change requests to resolve design issues.
  • Conduct quality control activities in accordance with instructions, inspection programs, using specified control measuring and testing equipment.
  • Prepare drawings and sketches to support construction work as required.
  • Understand and perform document control functions in accordance with on-site policy and procedures, including tracking and creating of RFIs, transmitting, and tracking of submittals, compose agreements, and maintain project expediting list.
  • Attend project coordination and /contractor/consultant/engineer meetings as requested or required.
  • Present oneself as a candidate for promotion by learning and understanding construction methods and developing good construction management skills.
  • Provide progress measurement reports to management.
  • Perform additional assignments and responsibilities as assumed or requested by supervision.
  • Ensure all equipment is being tracked and usage logs being completed and sent to appropriate individuals.
  • Provide clear work objectives and expectations of the performance levels required to achieve business objectives and goals.
  • Manage performance by setting expectations, conduct performance reviews and providing feedback and coaching to direct reports.
  • Promote the principle of ownership, accountability and mutual respect to the workforce and supervision.
  • Monitor the coordination of project activities in alignment with Marathon Gold’s objectives which will be instrumental to mitigating risk and increasing overall efficiency for site.
  • Ensure that contract and equipment resources are in place as required, to support: civil works, winter snow clearing, and sanding of roadways and yard areas and other services required to support the project.
  • Coordination of the daily activities of the crews to ensure a high level of service is provided to the project.
  • Review and develop where required; SOP’s, Risk assessments for the various activities in the to ensure they are suitable for the work being performed to support the project.
  • Ensure that effective Health, Safety and Environmental procedures, government regulations and Marathon Gold NL standard operating procedures (SOPs) are being implemented and followed.
  • Perform Safety inspections of the relevant areas in conjunction with Health, Safety and Environment personnel and contractors.
  • Provide administration and coordination of activities involved in mobilization and demobilization of freight and equipment to support the project.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Civil Discipline, or Technologist with significant experience in earthworks.
  • 10 years’ industry experience in a similar role, including at least 5 years in supervisory and managerial roles.
  • Project related experience is considered as asset.
  • Experience working with and knowledge of Industrial Benefits.
  • Experience with unionized and non-unionized workplaces.
  • A valid driver license and driver abstract.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ATTRIBUTES:

  • Proven field experience of surface construction activities especially at remote sites.
  • Working knowledge of construction equipment and techniques, drawings, and specifications, building materials, and required standards applicable to discipline.
  • Proficiency in the department’s computer system, department software, and typing necessary.
  • Ability to maintain positive working relationships with others, both internally and externally.
  • Ability to assume responsibility and to interface and communicate effectively with others.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills and ability to represent the company and project team in a professional manner to the client, related project staff and the community.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to anticipate, understand and respond to the needs of management and other clients to meet or exceed their expectations.
  • Work cooperatively and effectively with others to set goals, resolve problems, and make decisions to enhance organizational effectiveness; ability to take on self-directed tasks when necessary.
  • Excellent time management skills; attention to detail; and the capacity to prioritize by assessing situations to determine urgency.
  • Ability to work shift rotations and work in remote areas.
  • Demonstration of knowledge with respect to health, safety, and environmental requirements at remote sites.
  • Expert knowledge on Construction Safety Standards with ability to drive safety culture.
  • Ability to work and demonstrate an integrated team approach to construction.
  • Proven people leader with solid experience management and developing multidisciplinary teams.
  • Results-oriented with an extremely high work ethic, excellent communication, planning skills stringent quality standards, and a can-do attitude.
  • Project management experience that includes contracts and administration, materials control, and project accounting.
  • Previous management of multiple construction contractors simultaneously as part of the Project Management Team.
  • Development, coaching and training coordination of all direct reports to help team succeed.
  • Proven success in large scale industrial projects; experience in field leadership roles considered a strong advantage.
