The Volunteer's Role

This volunteer opportunity focuses on analyzing the production costs of coffee across different quality categories, involving a minimum sample of 20 producers. The objective is to present these costs to potential buyers, aiming to establish fairer and more sustainable pricing structures. As a volunteer, your responsibilities will include:

  • Introducing the project findings to key stakeholders
  • Exploring collaboration opportunities, gathering data, and devising new proposals
  • Assessing the production cost per quintal or its equivalent for dry parchment at current expenses
  • Understanding the production expenses of coffee producers
  • Crafting diverse business models for profitable farms across various categories, highlighting price/lb, farm performance, and production costs
  • Suggesting to the HCA and Cuso International team cooperatives to proceed to Phase 2, setting targets such as transitioning from 4% to 50% of profitable farms within 5 years using the defined business models
  • Assisting in designing Phases 2 and 3 of the project (developing strategies to enhance profitability in coffee farms)
  • Managing business relationships with partners
  • Formulating a marketing strategy to reach the target audience
  • Disseminating information to each producer to enable them to create their monitoring center, manage costs, and make adjustments for farm sustainability.
  • Additionally, there will be other tasks determined by Cuso International.

Essential Requirements:

Demonstrated expertise in conducting inclusive analysis involving gender perspectives, administration, and coffee management methodologies.

Essential Background:

Academic degree in agriculture, business engineering, marketing, social sciences, administration, and other related careers.

Project - Sharing Canadian Expertise for Inclusive Development and Gender Equality (SHARE)

Cuso International will deliver the Sharing Canadian Expertise for Inclusive Development and Gender Equality (SHARE) project, with a contribution from Global Affairs Canada (GAC) over seven years (2020-2027). SHARE aims to improve the economic and/or social well-being of the poorest, most marginalized and vulnerable people, particularly women and girls, in developing countries, with a view to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals. In addition to increasing engagement of Canadians in international development and key global issues, this project will aim to increase the performance of country partners to deliver more inclusive, innovative and environmentally sustainable development initiatives that advance gender equality, in support of the action areas of Canada's Feminist International Assistance Policy.
