Position Overview

The Department of Family Medicine in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Community Engagement Specialist. This Part-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Research Manager.

The Department of Family Medicine (DFM) is an academic department that delivers education, clinical services, and research programs. We are recruiting for a Community Engagement Specialist to support our research program. Community engagement, in collaboration with patient and community partners, will seek to engage diverse populations across the province.

Time may be split between projects but will focus predominantly on the CanTreatCOVID trial, a multi-centre national adaptive platform trial that will evaluate the clinical and cost-effectiveness of medications for COVID in non-hospitalized patients. The Community Engagement Specialist reports to the research manager and will work in collaboration with other team members. The Community Engagement Specialist will be responsible for community relations and engagement; strategic community-based initiatives; and program related training and education.

Some travel throughout the province is required; the employee must be willing to occasionally travel for project related activities.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
  • Community Relations and Engagement Advocacy
  • Acts as a liaison between community, healthcare providers, and research team to meet community needs
  • Networks and works collaboratively with community groups and other staff to initiate and build foundations for further health programming
  • Collaborates and builds partnerships and educates around issues to effect change
  • Works collaboratively with the clinical leaders, staff, and research team to ensure that equity and diversity are significantly integrated throughout all clinical programs, community engagement priorities, and research
  • Develops and implements staff and client training programs
  • Effectively collaborates/communicates with members of the research team and external agencies to support research, program planning and community outreach initiatives
  • Formulates interpersonal relationships with the team, external agencies and clients
  • Designs and implement strategies to increase awareness and understanding of the "Social Determinants of Health"
  • Follows a discipline process/methodology in the creation of evidence-based health promotion plans to support department quality improvement priorities
  • Contributes to excellence in public health by promoting the development and integration of evidence informed policy/practice, education, knowledge exchange and research
  • Contributes to the organizational mission of working with our communities to promote and protect health and prevent disease for everyone
  • Strategic Community Based Initiatives, and Program Training and Education
  • Investigate, analyze and report on current trends and ideas related to equity, health equity, diversity initiatives and community engagement initiatives;
  • Identify significant patient base, and seek opportunities for outreach and the development of relationships through community, patient, support, advocacy groups;
  • Identify and build relationships with key internal stakeholders;
  • Establish and maintain a database of key community groups and stakeholders
  • Manage concurrent projects; set and meet realistic objectives and completion dates.
  • Develop and implement staff and patient training programs for related projects
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • University Degree or Diploma in Health / Social Services or related field with a minimum of 5 years of related work experience
  • Demonstrated leadership and knowledge/skills in population health approaches, health equity, health policy, knowledge exchange, applied research, program planning, evaluation, and population health assessment and surveillance
  • Specialized knowledge and demonstrated leadership in the area of health equity and social inequities in health
  • Proven project/program management, interpersonal and administrative skills, including the ability to set priorities, establish timeframes, and organize resources
  • Strong strategic, analytical, problem-solving, facilitation and negotiation skills, as well as systems thinking ability
  • Experience in developing and supporting collaborative relationships with different groups or agencies
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) skills, particularly with respect to the interpretation and presentation of evidence and in the mobilization of project teams
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills, including collaborating with a team, working across program areas, disseminating information effectively and conflict resolution
  • Experience interacting with individuals from diverse ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds
  • Proven strong understanding and commitment to the social determinants of health
  • Knowledgeable of key change management and organizational development/ change principles (particularly with respect to equity and diversity)
  • Demonstrated experience in the coordination of events and public engagement, communication and/or workshop facilitation
