Purpose:
Under the general direction of the Manager, Enterprise Analytics & Business Applications, the Data Architect serves as the technical lead for the design and delivery of enterprise-level big data solutions to support data analytics, reporting and integration activities. The Data Architect will work in collaboration with business and technical stakeholders to design, develop and implement data pipelines, data processing, data warehouse and data analytics systems. This role will ensure that complex technical solutions and environments are built reliably, optimized for scale, and meet enterprise security standards. The successful incumbent will play a key role in designing and creating a conceptual, logical, and physical data model that underpins the institutional enterprise data warehouse to support university-wide data analytics and integration activities, and acts as an important contributor, collaborator and architect to strategies for managing and enriching the institutional data repository.
Education:
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, IT or related field. Masters degree preferred.
- Data management or data architecture certification would be an asset.
- Service management certification (ITIL, IT4IT, etc.) an asset.
Experience:
- 6 years of IT experience in large scale technology architecture, operations, and design-related disciplines inclusive of the following:
- 4 years of experience as a Data Architect/Data Engineer with a demonstrated strength in data modeling, ETL development and data warehousing to design, develop and implement enterprise big data solutions.
- 4 years of experience with SQL and managing large data sets using relational databases (Oracle, SQL Server, etc.).
- 4 years hands-on experience in programming and scripting languages (e.g., Python, Java, Spark) with an understanding of SDLC principles.
- 4 years designing and working in Cloud Data Warehouse solutions. Preference for Oracle Cloud or Microsoft Azure.
- 4 years' experience with business intelligence tools/solutions.
- Practical experience using data visualization and business intelligence tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau, Magellan BI) to analyze data.
- Experience with MDM and Data quality software.
- Solid experience with data privacy and security practices, metadata management, data governance and access controls within an enterprise data management framework.
- Experience in Higher Education would be an asset.
Skills:
Knowledge
- Expert knowledge with data architecture, including data modelling, data governance (policies, standards, processes & quality) and data management (identify, collect/ingest, process, orchestrate, store, organize, secure, access & integrity).
- Familiarity with ETL solutions. experience with Informatica, Oracle Data Integrator (ODI) and Azure Data Factory would be an asset.
- Data integration and streaming integration concepts and architecture.
- Data ETL pipelines for large-scale transformations, conversion, and partitioning.
- Techniques for identifying data quality rules, and detecting and addressing data quality issues.
- Interacting with middleware (API gateways).
- Infrastructure orchestration using IaC principles and CI/CD pipelines.
- Good knowledge of MDM concepts, matching and survivorship and publishing the golden record.
- Good knowledge of Erwin data modeler or similar data modeling tools.
- Knowledge of event streaming, message queues, and Kaftka an asset.
