Job Summary
As a part of Calgary Economic Development’s Marketing & Communications team, the Director of Communications will be responsible for the creation and delivery of a comprehensive communications and media relations plan for the organization. The Director, Communications will hold the pen on all executive communications, as well as oversee key products; such as key messages, op-eds, news releases, presentations and speaking notes.

The Director, Communications will report to the Senior Director, Marketing & Communications but will also work directly with the Vice President, Marketing & Communications.

What You'll Be Doing
Establish the comprehensive communications and media strategy in alignment with the organization’s priorities and business objectives.
Align strategies with the business objectives and the other teams reporting to the Vice-President of Marketing and Communications, Strategy and Strategic Alliances.
Work closely with the Director of Government Relations to ensure communications are strategic and consider external environmental factors.
Proactively identify storylines and opportunities to advance the growth of CED’s narrative.
Hold the pen on all executive speaking notes and content and oversee and write press material, talking points, press releases, speeches and reports.
Act as brand guardian and reputation manager with the media and key stakeholders.
Establish and maintain relationships with the media and proactively manage communication opportunities with the media.
Ensure optimal media coverage at the local and national levels.
Establish and maintain an effective crisis management plan.
Incorporate best practices and tools to optimize work processes and media monitoring.
Coach and support various experts for media interviews or other strategic speaking engagements.
Make sure messaging to all internal and external stakeholders is consistent.
Recommend and create performance indicators to evaluate and monitor the progress of media relations and public affairs activities.
Supervise and manage a team of 3-4 professionals.
Continuously monitor employee performance and development.

Qualifications

We’d like to know more about you if you have:
10 to 12 years of experience in communications, media relations and public affairs.
Extensive experience in issues management, public affairs and crisis management.
Extensive experience in media relations, social media and public affairs.
Superior writing skills and the ability the cut through the noise and jargon to produce pithy content.
Strategic mindset to develop communication plans.
Demonstrated ability to effectively interact with senior management.
Ability to question how things are done and to proactively develop ingenious solutions in the interest of good management.
Ability to simultaneously manage multiple urgent projects and adapt to a changing environment.
Strong ability to act independently, stay organized and focus on priorities.
Knowledge of the business line is an asset.
Experience in a large corporation with national or international operations.
Experience in mergers and acquisitions is an asset.
Demonstrated attention to detail and diligence.
Demonstrated experience in team management.
Bachelor’s degree in journalism, public relations, marketing, communications or any other relevant field.
Minimum 10 years of progressively increased responsibility in communications, media relations and public affairs. Membership with professional organization (IABC / CPRS) is considered an asset

Key Competencies:
Issues management and crisis communications experience.
Proven experience in content creation and brand management in an online environment.
Understanding of business audience, content plans, and bringing a variety of communication styles into a single voice.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Proven project management skills with the ability to multi-task and meet deadlines.
Experience working with politically sensitive and confidential information.
Knowledge and experience in communications strategy and planning.
People leadership and ability to set a strategic vision for a team.
Strong organizational and time management skills; detail oriented and structured.
