Role
We are looking for a senior technologist with advanced geospatial skills to fill a unique position that makes an impact on Alberta's environmental landscape.
As part of the Provincial Geospatial Centre (PGC) and reporting to the Geospatial Unit Lead, Central, you would be responsible for preparing and managing spatial data, complex spatial analysis, geo-processing and development (scripting, add-ins, tools, etc), customized cartographic products, reports and other visualizations. You will also be responsible for any other geospatial work requested by PGC clients in support of regional and departmental business priorities and programs and act as a subject matter expert on resource information, geomatics and GIS. You would provide timely and accurate technical support to facilitate program delivery in various areas of the department as well as identified high priority government programs external to the department. You would assist in supporting the goals and objectives of Alberta's commitment to sustainable resources and environmental management by ensuring public lands and natural resources are managed to sustain their economic, social and environmental values and benefits for future generations.
The primary nature of the work requires the application of principles of Geographic Information systems (GIS) technology, data analytics and development, cartography, geoprocessing, and data management. You will have the ability to function independently with minimal supervision, as well as within a team setting, work within defined and often constrained timelines, and communicate clearly with clients, colleagues, and co-workers.
This position offers considerable scope for originality and individual initiative.
Your responsibilities would include:
- Providing complex data management and quality assurance for internal government clients, ensuring all parties have current/common information to assist with sound resource management decision making.
- Contributing to decision-making through the design of high level spatial analysis products and data integrity and continuity.
- Constructing digital/hardcopy products for analysis, reports, planning, presentation, or litigation all in support of departmental priorities.
- Maintaining, upholding and contributing to the understanding of GIS technology within the client/user community to ensure the up-to-date and efficient application of GIS resources.
- Exploring innovative solutions or approaches to modernizing workflows and service delivery.
- Providing insight/guidance into project flow and possible avenues for completion to assist clients with decision-making and to assist junior staff with project work.
Requirements:
- Two year technical diploma in Geomatics, GIS, or related natural resource field.
- Plus Six years of related experience.
- 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
- 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.
- Demonstrated experience in the use of GIS software, primarily ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Pro, and Portal environments.
- Established skills in advanced geoprocessing, scripting (i.e. Python, JavaScript / C# and others) and automation of GIS workflows.
- Experience in the applications and processing of aerial and satellite remotely sensed data and imagery.
- Working knowledge of MS Office, GPS/GNSS software, and web-based GIS Platforms.

Salary
$2,654.45 to $3,485.57 bi-weekly ($69,281 - $90,973/year)
