Head Brewer

The Head Brewer is a critical component of the Imperial City Brew House (ICBH) team since they are responsible for all aspects of the beer production process and day-to-day operations of the brewery. This role ensures the smooth brewing production of ICBH’s craft beverages and makes necessary purchasing decisions for supplies and ingredients. The Head Brewer is knowledgeable about current brewing trends and adjusts their production projections appropriately.

This position is highly experienced with different brew varieties and is ultimately responsible for the quality of the brews that are produced at ICBH. Maintaining the brew house’s reputation and brand are important aspects of this role. The Head Brewer liaises with the Board of Directors and Senior Management and helps to develop the company strategy for ICBH.

Duties and Responsibilities

- Brewing ICBH proprietary and rotational craft beverages.

- Ordering ingredients and supplies.

- Maintaining equipment and record keeping.

- Conducting regular inventory counts.

- Maintaining brewing, canning, and cleaning schedules.

- Completing brewing schedules.

- Writing and modifying standard operating procedures.

- Cost effectiveness.

- Liaising with suppliers as necessary.

- Liaising with the Board of Directors, Senior Management, and sales department.

- Maintaining inventory control.

- Completing Ontario and Federal Excise Tax documents.

- Cleaning tap lines.

- Promoting safety and identifying concerns.

- Utilizing recipe development and brewhouse operational software.

- Being an ambassador of ICBH.

- Other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

- 5 years’ experience in the science of brewing craft beer.

- Completion of a degree or certification in brewing is an asset.

- Familiarity with brewing processes and equipment.

- Engineering and mechanical skills an asset.

- Possess the ability to examine and re-engineer processes and procedures, develop and implement new strategies and procedures as necessary.

- Prioritizing and making sound decisions under pressure and within tight deadlines.

- Possess excellent project management skills.

- Possess exceptional problem-solving skills.

- Possess working knowledge of a brew house.

- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

- Ability to multi-task.

- Work and communicate effectively.

- Capacity to oversee and train personnel, including the ability to organize, prioritize, and schedule job tasks.

- Smart Serve and Retail Alcohol Sales Certification.

- Safe Food Handler Certification.

- G-driver’s license in good standing.

- Work independently and without supervision.

- Ability to work within a team.

Working Conditions

- Job duties are completed on-site.

- Must be able to lift 30kg and up to 80kg regularly.

- Ability to stand for extended periods of time.

- Must be able to walk, use hands, reach, climb, work from heights, stoop, kneel and crouch.

- Ability to perform repetitive motions for extended periods of time.

- Ability to work near moving parts and machinery.

- Ability to work in loud, wet, cold, hot, indoor, and outdoor environments.

- Working on evenings and/or weekends may be required according to emergencies in the production area.

- Production may involve the need for personal protective equipment such as ear protectors, goggles, and other equipment for handling hot liquids.

- Overtime may be required.
