About Our Opportunity
The Highway Design Technician is responsible for providing technical CAD support to the Highway Planning and Design team. Reporting to the Manager, Highway Planning and Design, the incumbent is responsible for the production of maps, preliminary design plans, presentation visuals/materials, construction documents and other deliverables as required using civil engineering drafting, 3D modelling/visualization techniques and various CAD or GIS applications.
Primary Accountabilities
The Highway Design Technician is responsible for providing technical CAD support to the Highway Design team. Reporting to the Manager, Highway Planning and Design, the incumbent is responsible for the preparation of detailed Highway Design drawings and final plan production using AutoCAD Civil 3D software while ensuring information is interpreted and represented on drawings correctly. They are responsible for assembling and distributing the final design plans required for construction tenders in conformance with Department CAD standards, and maintaining both the hard copy and electronic drawing inventory.
Assisting the Highway Planning and Design engineers in the interpretation and processing of survey data, LiDAR, GIS, and other mapping and design information is also required.  Responsibilities include assisting the Highway Design team with the detailed design of highways, interchanges, intersections and drainage infrastructure through the development of various design elements, 3D corridor modeling and assisting with calculating material quantities.
Qualifications and Experience
Grade 12 plus completion of an approved Civil Engineering Technology program, or an equivalent combination of training and experience may be accepted.
The position requires in-depth knowledge of computer hardware and software applications related to the planning and design of highway infrastructure. Additional training/courses in CAD drafting, GIS or graphics is an asset. A good knowledge and understanding of all aspects of CAD as it applies to Civil Engineering planning/design is required. Candidate must have knowledge of basic surveying and/or GIS principles and ability to interpret and process survey data, LiDAR and other mapping and design information. Considerable experience and ability in the use of AutoCAD Civil 3D is required. A working knowledge of other software applications such as Word Processors, Spreadsheets, and Database programs would be an asset.
The Highway Planning and Design Technician must have the ability to quickly grasp concepts of end products and provide suggestions for the optimal presentation of design information. Must be a self-starter, motivated and be able to perform with minimal supervision. The ability to handle multiple projects and shifting priorities is also required. Effective verbal and written communication skills are required.
 
Equivalency
An equivalent combination of training, education and experience will be considered. Related equivalencies may include, but are not limited to:
-High School plus 2 years of related experience with GIS, CAD/drafting and/or surveying.

-Normal work week is 35 hours/week, 7 hours/day.

Pay Grade:  TE 16 - TE 22  
Salary Range:  $1,726.97 - $2,561.85 Bi-Weekly
