Job description

Intern LibrariansEdmonton , AB

Description

This posting is for two temporary positions until May 2025.

The Edmonton Public Library is looking for two highly motivated librarians to join our team as our 2024/25 Intern Librarians. This Internship opportunity is a chance to show that you have the right stuff to contribute to a dynamic organization. We are looking for a librarian who is passionate about reducing barriers to accessing library services and providing an exceptional customer experience.

Collections and Spaces – Intern Librarian

Under the direction of the Executive Director, Customer Experience, the Collections and Spaces Intern Librarian will employ research, evaluation, and assessment to conduct an in-depth review of spaces with a focus on collection use to understand and assess how customers are using library material to inform recommendations to improve the customer experience. The intern will analyze EPL’s public spaces and how their use impact collection usage through observational studies, journey mapping, analysis of circulation data, in-house use data, comparative analysis of borrowing patterns, customer interviews, etc. The research undertaken by the Collections and Spaces Intern Librarian will inform future direction for EPL’s branch refresh and space planning initiatives, physical layout, shelving, display, and circulation practices.

Researcher – Intern Librarian

Under the direction of the Executive Director, Collections, Marketing, and Technology, the Research Intern will conduct literature reviews, environmental scans, and surveys on a variety of topics. The Intern will closely support EPL’s senior leadership and other key individuals by conducting staff and customer surveys to understand how the concept of convivencia* can be woven into EPL’s public spaces and services. Additionally, the Intern will conduct a comprehensive literature review and environmental scan on the subject of digital literacy to support the evolution of EPL’s digital literacy services and programs.

* Convivencia is a Latin American concept for a cooperative state between harmony and open conflict, which emphasizes practice, effort, negotiation, and accommodation. To strive for convivencia is approaching public life as a dance, an active and constant negotiation where a diverse set of actors learns over time to share public goods and spaces but where mistakes and friction are an inevitable part of public life.
