Lead Hand, Production
Under the general supervision of the Supervisor, Production, and within established policies, procedures, and guidelines to assist the Supervisor, Production in planning, maintaining, and providing team leadership for all production crops, interior display, equipment/machinery, and greenhouse facilities.
Niagara Parks offers an an hourly rate of $28.45 - $34.98 ($59,176.00 - $72,758.40 annualized) (Pay Band 11) as well as a comprehensive benefit and pension plan. Applications for this position will be accepted until January 28, 2024.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Completion of a recognized diploma in Horticulture or equivalent knowledge and experience.
- Must possess valid Greenhouse/Interior Plant Exterminator Pesticide License.
- Experience and knowledge of propagation techniques and greenhouse methods and procedures.
- A minimum of three (3) years of practical experience plus one (1) on the job.
- Experience creating and following propagation schedules and maintaining excellent records.
- Ability to plan and assign tasks, as well as lead a group or team. Must be proficient with computer software (Microsoft Office Suite).
- Must have previous experience operating Greenhouse Environmental Control systems.
- Willing and able to work overtime on short notice and to perform shift work necessary to fulfil the requirement of a seven-day operation.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
GROUP LEADERSHIP
- Assists with long term and short-term production planning.
- Assigns and monitors work for regular, season and student employees.
- Organizes work schedules with Supervisor and monitors weekly hours worked for payroll purposes.
- Provides input to Supervisor on employee year end appraisals.
- Monitors performance of all production crops.
- Trains and mentors’ employees in methods and procedures.
- Informs Supervisor of equipment, tools and vehicles that are needing repaired/replaced or has maintenance staff investigate.
- Orders plant material, greenhouse supplies and monitors inventory.
- Conducts monthly Health and Safety Inspections.
- Monitors IPM program.
- Works with Lead Hand, Design to monitor exhibition and displays.
- Provides first aid and prepares accident reports for Supervisor of Production approval.
- Provides excellent customer service to internal and external customers and staff.
- Co-ordinates work with other departments and external customers.
- Monitors and programs Environmental Control Systems to ensure correct climate for crops.
GROWER
- Seeds and propagates seasonal as well as exhibition crops.
- Provides cultural care for greenhouse crops such as watering, fertilizing and staking.
- Sands, salts paths, sidewalks, parking lots, removes snow and ice.
OTHER RELATED DUTIES
- Performs a variety of labouring duties as required.
- Fill in for Supervisor of Production absences when requested.
- Programing for SOH mist benches
- Programing for ‘A’ and ‘B’ range lighting systems
- Programing for ‘A’ & ‘B’ range shade cloths
- As assigned
