We are seeking a Leader, Learning and Development to join our Human Resources (HR) team.  Reporting to the Director, HR Business Consulting and Organizational Capability, you will be accountable for developing a robust learning strategy using value-based learning principles to build capability within the organization. In addition, you will also be accountable for delivering an integrated suite of talent development principles and solutions in alignment with company values, strategy, and business needs. The portfolio includes Workforce and Succession Planning, Performance and Development, Employee and Leadership Development, New Hire Orientation and Onboarding, Learning standards, infrastructure, content management and Success Factors Learning Management Systems.

This position can be located at any of the following NOVA Chemicals locations: downtown Calgary, Alberta; Red Deer, Alberta; Sarnia, Ontario; or Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

You Will Use Your Expertise To:

Due to the breadth of the portfolio, this position is primarily focused on the leadership and development of a team of content experts. You will ensure the team works collaboratively within the function and across all facets of the business as needed. A key accountability is to ensure the team is creating strategic approaches and providing integrated solutions that enable employees and leaders to fulfill their roles most effectively. The team will be managed both locally and virtually while operating in a cohesive and interdependent fashion across Canada and the United States.

Under the accountability and leadership of the Leader, Learning and Development the team is responsible for:

  • Enabling the organization to build a learning culture and ensure the learning architecture is aligned strategically and can evolve and grow over time
  • Interacting with Senior and Executive Leadership on matters related to Learning, capability building and delivering excellence in the area
  • Utilizing networks, external subject matter experts, partners, and vendors to bring the latest thought leadership in the area of Learning and Development
  • Design, integration and delivery of core Learning solutions, programs, processes, and associated systems to optimize their effectiveness and alignment to company strategy and values
  • Project management and technical expertise in design scope, integration, content quality and implementation of new or redesigned systems/processes/programs
  • Governance and continuous improvement – portfolio performance measurement
  • Excellence in change management and embedding consistency across the organization
  • Building capability in HR Business Partners in the principles of program design and the implementation and sustainability of Learning and capability development programs and practices
  • Working closely with HR Business Partners and Business Leaders to enact excellence in Learning and enable a learning culture
  • External vendor management – ensures arrangements that benefit NOVA Chemicals and deliver quality product and services

What We Are Looking For:

  • University graduate (with a concentration in Human Resources or related degree) and have 10-15 years of leadership experience creating and managing a Learning and Development function or related HR function.
  • A broad range of expertise and experience across areas of learning and talent development including leadership and employee development, performance and development, strategic workforce planning and leadership succession planning
  • Highly collaborative and consultative approach in a team environment; must have experience in a highly consultative leadership structure
  • Fully understands company strategies, business drivers and business processes, and can articulate how Learning and HR support/impact the business
  • Strong knowledge and application experience with HR technologies, specifically learning solutions and digital enablers
  • Ability to design programs/processes/systems using a ‘systems thinking’ approach and coach others to do same
  • Ability to interact with all levels of leadership in the organization
  • High degree of external networking with senior level external industry and/or other individuals to determine best practices and approaches
  • Demonstrated strong leadership, coaching and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated project management, change leadership, and change management skills to implement and sustain new approaches to learning and learning cultures at an organizational level
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize workload and manage a broad, interdependent project portfolio

Additional Information:

  • Relocation will be considered to the nearest geographical NOVA Chemicals' location for this position
  • Compensation will be commensurate with education and experience
  • This role requires up to 20% travel
  • The successful candidate must have the ability to travel to all operating sites in Canada and the United States as necessary
