Job description

Description

Matter Here. Work at Vancouver Island University. We invite applications for the regular, half-time role of ereHProfessor, Media Studies.

About the Department:

The Media Studies Department at Vancouver Island University offers a unique balance of theory and praxis through its close association of critical theory and applied knowledge. These two approaches within the program are mutually supportive: applied projects reflect greater engagement with issues and have more substance when informed by the thoughtful application of theory; and theoretical reflection is tempered, balanced, and deepened by the demands of technical production involving its own types of problem-solving.

Duties and Responsibilities

About the Role:

Undergraduate teaching will be your main priority in this role. This position involves teaching critical media analysis and digital media making to small classes of engaged undergraduate students in a mix of studio and classroom delivery.

Areas of focus include digital literacies, social media, visual culture, critical media analysis, advertising and marketing, and introductory media production skills.

Education

Required Qualifications:

  • A PhD (completed, ABD, or in-progress) in a related field from an appropriately accredited institution
  • A strong record of teaching or clear promise of excellence for working in a teaching-focused undergraduate program is required.
  • Candidates must clearly demonstrate the ability to teach BOTH media making AND critical media analysis with a focus on six areas noted in the first paragraph.

How to Apply

To Apply:

View the full position profile and apply online. Please ensure your cover letter focuses on teaching, and that you highlight your technical media making skills and experience as well as your theoretical foundations. Please ensure your CV includes your technical competencies.

Short-listed candidates will be asked to teach a (15 minute) short segment in your introductory class for MEDI 211: Understanding Television as a part of the interview to assess your teaching style, how you might organize a course, develop diverse curricula, make evident your thoughts on modes of assessment, and how you imagine engaging and inspiring students.
