Reporting to the Associate Dean, Human Services and Community Safety, the incumbent develops and delivers NFPA 1072 Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations: Mission Specific courses in the Pre-Service Firefighter Education and Training program. Courses for Winter 2023 are scheduled on Mondays and Wednesdays so some/full availability during those days is required.
Specific duties include, but are not limited to:
- Delivering Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations Theory & Practical courses in the Pre-Service Firefighter program
- Deliver courses in-person
- Developing and delivering appropriate curriculum to meet course objectives
- Incorporating a variety of teaching / learning strategies to meet student needs
- Evaluating student progress / achievement
- Participating in program and college activities as required
- Participating in program revision and renewal activities as required
- Creating and maintaining a positive learning environment
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Certified in NFPA 1072 (472) Standard for Competence of Responders to Hazardous Materials/Weapons of Mass Destruction Emergency Response Personnel Professional - Technician Level or higher.
- Successfully completed a Pre-Service Firefighter Education and Training program and/or NFPA 1001 Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications and NFPA 1072 (472) Standard for Competence of Responders to Hazardous Materials/ Weapons of Mass Destruction Operations (Core) and Mission Specific.
- NFPA 1041 Standard for Fire Service Instructor Professional Level One required. NFPA 1041 Standard for Fire Service Instructor Professional Level Two would be considered an asset.
- A minimum of three years’ experience in firefighting
- Excellent communication, interpersonal and problem-solving skills
- Proven ability to work in a team environment and to foster the same in their students
- Experience managing change and leading innovation
- A commitment to life-long learning
- Experience in some or all of the following is an asset: curriculum development, a variety of delivery strategies, adult learning methodologies, academic advising, and student success strategies
- Computer literacy: Microsoft Office Suite
- Computer literacy with a Learning Management System / Web Delivery Software (i.e. Blackboard) and a Student Information System would be considered an asset
- Teaching and Training Adults certification and / or experience in a teaching or training capacity is an asset
Acceptable proof of education (degrees, credentials) from recognized post-secondary institutions or confirmation of international equivalencies will be required as part of the selection process.
