The Opportunity

The City of St. John’s is presently accepting applications for a Dispatcher - Level I on a call-in basis with the 911 Communications Center, St. John's Regional Fire Department. The 911 Center provides a 24-hour a day 911 Emergency System to approximately 182,000 citizens on the Avalon Peninsula, and is dedicated to providing the fastest and most efficient response to emergencies.

Accountabilities

Receives 911 and other related emergency calls and, in turn, dispatches appropriate equipment, and/or routes call to other emergency agencies as appropriate; Records all calls in the CAD (Computer Assisted Dispatch) System; Keeps all on-duty logs up-to-date; Provides a central point of radio contact for the SJRFD at emergencies and under the direction of the Communications Supervisor performs such duties as arranging support services, notifying
other agencies, and rotating equipment; Notifies the Communications Supervisor of all pertinent information regarding emergencies and calls for assistance; Maintains all directories, maps, response, and property information files in manual and electronic format; and Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications

Successful completion of high school. Specific course work in dispatch communications is preferred but not required. Previous experience handling calls of an urgent nature in a team environment while remaining calm and rational is required. Must have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office and be able to efficiently conduct internet searches with limited information. Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills with a high attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining confidentiality at all times. Familiarity with local geography and the operations of an emergency dispatch center are considered assets. Must pass a color acuity examination and possess valid CPR and First Aid certification. Applicants must be able to obtain at least 30 wpm on a typing test and complete an aptitude test as administered by the employer.

Physical Requirements

This position is classified as safety sensitive. The City of St. John’s has a comprehensive Alcohol and Drug Policy to ensure fitness for work and the completion of a satisfactory alcohol and drug test is a mandatory pre-employment requirement.

Hours of Work

Call in shift work as required (no guaranteed hours). Shifts include 10 hour day shifts (7:30am-5:30pm) and 14 hour night shifts (5:30pm to 7:30am).

Applicants must be members of the International Association of Firefighters, Local 1075, or should be prepared to join the Union immediately upon appointment.
