Job Summary
Communications, Marketing & Creative Services (CMC) supports Dalhousie University’s strategic priorities by working with departments and units to tell the stories of the students, faculty, and staff who make Dalhousie an extraordinary place. In addition, CMC’s graphic design team supports Communications, Marketing & Creative Services’ strategic plan and enhances the university’s strategic priorities with a particular focus on developing superior design materials that engage various audiences. The Senior Manager, Graphic Design is a member of CMC’s graphic design team carrying out leadership and supervisory responsibilities for the team and managing a portfolio of design-related projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Provides leadership, supervisory responsibility, and performance development to graphic design team members, and acts as the primary approver for graphic designers on university brand and visual identity.
- Provides strategic advice and represents Creative Services at relevant University/external meetings.
- Assists in setting strategic direction for the Design team, and evaluates current practices, policies, procedures, and culture that might be impacted by new strategic directions and make recommendations for their improvement.
- Contributes graphic design expertise to the team, providing consultation and art direction, as well as creating, developing and applying visual communications consistent with Dalhousie’s brand strategy and appropriate to target audiences.
- Creates artwork for print or electronic production, ensuring brand application and alignment.
Note
The successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in-person work on campus and remote work) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines.

Required Qualifications
- Undergraduate degree with five years’ experience in a design management/art direction environment, with a solid track record of successful creative development and delivery (or equivalent combination of training and experience).
- Professional membership in a graphic or communications design organization.
- Design problem-solving based on recognized design theory, emphasizing communication and interpretation of client messages using technically complex production methods.
- Expertise in graphic design, image editing and support software, including Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat); Microsoft 365; major social media platforms (e.g., Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and Snapchat).
- Excellent communication skills, working in a deadline driven environment, and collaborating effectively will the whole University community, including senior leadership.
