Job Description

Plans, coordinates and executes the research, writing and editing of internal and external communications assignments in all media; supports the communications needs of the Corporation, giving priority to the executive team — up to and including the President and CEO, creating effective internal and external messages.


Conceives and writes high-impact and sensitive communications such as speeches, video scripts, articles, opinion pieces, parliamentary committee submissions, press releases, white papers, marketing material and employee communications as well as critical, auditable documents in a deadline-driven and high-pressure environment. Ensures client and corporate objectives and policies are met by researching subjects to obtain and verify facts, and proofreads and edits material for meaning, effectiveness, clarity, accuracy, relevance, and consistent style and format. Observes a consistent client- and stakeholder-focused approach set by the Director.

Job Responsibilities

Below are the main job requirements and responsibilities for the Senior Writer/Editor.


  • Provides effective client- and stakeholder-focused writing and editing services to internal clients at all management levels that support successful delivery of key communications messages in all media. Collaborates with senior executive decisions on internal and external messages.


  • Plays a key role in the development of strategic communications, helping clients to plan and critically assess key messages in the context of the company’s brand and reputation.


  • Ensures the client’s objectives are met, as well as corporate objectives and policies, by researching subjects to obtain and verify facts, then writes, proofreads and edits material for meaning, effectiveness, clarity, accuracy, relevance, and consistent style and format.


  • Creates and writes communications strategies and materials in all media that are of a high-profile and sensitive nature, such as speeches for the executive management team, parliamentary committee submissions, as well as high-profile documents such as the Annual Report. Required to write communications on behalf of Directors, General Managers or senior leaders as required.

  • Writes and edits materials for different audiences, such as unionized employees, management, customers, the public and elected officials, adapting for different channels: social, video, digital, print and talk tracks.


  • Works closely and collaboratively with the entire Communications group as a whole under the direction of the General Manager and SVP, Corporate and Employee Communications, to ensure the effective and efficient implementation of communications initiatives; supports the pursuit of goals identified by Communications leadership.


  • Builds and maintains a comprehensive and current knowledge of Canada Post’s operations, business, brand, strategies and competitive standing to ensure accurate understanding and interpretation of the issues, trends and context when creating communications strategies and writing and editing materials in all media.


  • Supports a positive work environment and culture, meeting the objectives and performance expectations of the Writing Services group and successfully delivering strategies overseen by Client Services. Shares best practices and identifies opportunities that improve overall communications services.

Qualifications

Education

  • Post-secondary diploma in a relevant discipline such as Journalism, Communications or the Arts, OR a combination of equivalent professional experience and training


Experience

  • A minimum of 7 to 10 years of successful, proven experience as a writer and editor across various channels, including digital and social media
  • Experience preferred: writing speeches, annual reports, op-ed pieces, news releases, statements or submissions to government and/or creative briefs as demonstrated in a portfolio
  • Experience reviewing corporate materials and reports
  • Experience writing about business strategies or corporate or public finance would be a definite asset


Other Candidate Requirements

  • Superior communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent research, writing and editing skills as demonstrated in clippings, a portfolio or online content
  • Experience writing for a variety of audiences and tailoring content and style accordingly
