Position Information
This position is with the Legal, Privacy, Governance and Risk Management Services.
Reporting to and under the direction of the General Counsel and Chief Privacy Officer (GC and CPO), the Specialist, Legal Services and Information and Privacy Office provides specialized privacy, freedom of information and legal services, as well as specialized consulting services and evidence based advice on complex cases to identify and mitigate risk to the organization while advancing corporate goals and initiatives. The role is crucial in ensuring TOH is compliant in meeting legal and regulatory responsibilities in the areas of freedom of information, corporate law, privacy law, anti-spam law, research, health law, legislative compliance, corporate governance and risk management. Focused on delivering better value for money and our value of working together, the Specialist develops and maintains strong working relationships with TOH's internal stakeholders, external colleagues, and external legal counsel. The Specialist is also accountable for identifying new ways to efficiently and effectively protect the organization from legal liability, reduce financial liabilities, and educate management in efforts to proactively avoid adverse outcomes, financially and otherwise.

Days, 8 hour shifts.
Basic Requirements
- Graduation from a 4-year undergraduate program with a Juris Doctor degree (J.D.), Bachelor of Law (LLB) degree, or equivalent;
- Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience, such as working in a leading law firm, compliance or corporate legal department, privacy or freedom of information services, or equivalent;
- Experience and aptitute for creation and delivery of an operation plan;
- Legal research abilities including solid working knowledge of electronic legal databases and legal reference tools (CanLII, WestlawNext, LexisNexis Quicklaw, Brown, and Beatty, etc.)
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Office 365, SharePoint;
- Knowledge of hospital policies, rules, and regulations;
- Superior knowledge of legal principles and framework;
- Expertise in health law, including a detailed understanding of health and hospital-related legislations, regulations, and policies;
- Ability to conduct efficient legal research queries and to navigate databases in order to find relevant and useful legal precedents and legislation;
- Ability to analyze problems, develop and assess solutions and provide risk management assessments for clientele to ensure legal and regulatory compliance;
- Ability to compose and edit organizational policies and other written materials;
- Proven contract drafting and review capabilities;
- Highly-developed legal and analytical skills;
- Superior written and verbal communication skills;
- Demonstrated project management and organizational skills;
- Excellent research skills and attention to detail;
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively with others, including demonstrated consensus building skills and excellent interpersonal skills;
- Ability to develop and deliver education presentations and materials;
- Eligible to work in Canada.
Preferred Qualifications
- IAPP/CIPP Certification;
- Membership in good standing with the Law Society of Upper Canada;
- Experience working in a healthcare or health-related environment.
