(Contractual Position to March 30, 2025)

Established in 2003, ACENET is a consortium of post-secondary institutions in Atlantic Canada providing researchers in academia and industry with advanced computing and research data management resources, tools, software, training, and support. We help our clients use advanced computing as a means of accelerating discovery and innovation, keeping Atlantic Canada at the forefront of scientific research and development. ACENET is a regional partner of the Digital Research Alliance of Canada, the organization responsible for advanced research computing, research data management and research software in Canada. ACENET's mission is to help researchers get their research done more efficiently. We do this by providing access to advanced computing resources, and by making those resources as easy to use as we can.

ACENET is seeking a System Administrator in St. John's, NL to support the management and maintenance of a number of high-performance computing clusters and storage infrastructures across Atlantic Canada.

DUTIES

Reporting to the Chief Technology Officer, the incumbent will be responsible for ensuring that ACENET's research computing and storage systems maintain their integrity, security and performance. The System Administrator will participate in the development and implementation of new technological solutions, and will be responsible for assessing and testing these solutions. This position will work closely with an Atlantic Canadian team of High-Performance Computing System Administrators, Cybersecurity Analyst and Research Consultants, with duties extending nationally through ACENET's partnership with the Digital Research Alliance of Canada (the Alliance).

Duties include administering, monitoring, and maintaining high performance computing clusters, storage solutions, servers, and networks to provide system access and reliability; installing, configuring, and updating hardware and software to optimize system performance; developing and managing backup and recovery strategies to ensure data continuity in case of system failures or disasters; providing technical support to staff, researchers and national collaborators; consulting with university principal investigators, research teams, government and industry clients to assist with determining solutions to meet their specific research storage and system requirements; collaborating with external vendors for hardware procurement and support; working closely with cross-functional teams, including researchers, ACENET Research Consultants, and Alliance stakeholders to ensure that systems perform optimally and align with national directions; creating and maintaining system documentation and standard operating procedures; staying current with emerging technologies and industry trends to ensure the systems remain cutting-edge and efficient.

QUALIFICATIONS

Applied experience, preferably in a research or academic environment; completion of a university degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field; or any equivalent combination of experience and training. The ideal candidate is expected to be passionate about high-performance computing, networking hardware, file systems, and configuration management. Previous experience in Linux systems administration, storage technologies such as parallel file systems and backup solutions, scripting and light programming (e.g. Bash, Python, Ruby, Go, Version control) is required. Knowledge of physical and logical network concepts, and their application in private and public network environments is essential. The successful applicant will possess excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills, strong communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work independently as well as part of a collaborative team.
