Youth Services Librarian

Reporting to the Manager, Youth Services, the Youth Services Librarian supports the creation, planning, implementation, and evaluation of services addressing the needs of youth, teens, and families with school-aged children. The Youth Services Librarian will develop presentations for visits to local schools to engage students with Idea Exchange. The Youth Services Librarian will maintain Youth Services collections to meet the standards of Idea Exchange and is responsible for the development of reference and reader’s advisory services for youth ages 0-18.

What You’ll Do

As Youth Services Librarian, you will:

  • Support and provide expertise to Team Leads and staff in the development, delivery, and evaluation of youth programming.
  • Work closely with local school teachers, librarians, students, and volunteers providing recreational, educational, and curricular materials both in the library and in the community.
  • Evaluate materials, utilize statistical data and reports for collection maintenance, and make withdrawals according to library guidelines. Maintains the Youth Services collection at the Queen’s Square location and makes recommendations for Youth Services collections system-wide.
  • Undertake system-wide projects, new initiatives and, large-scale events as project coordinator with an emphasis on Youth Services programming and collections. This includes research, recommendations, creation of training, piloting, evaluation and then final implementation to all locations.
  • Conduct children’s and teen programs and assists with or conducts other programs or events as requested.
  • Assist the Manager, Youth Services, in organizing the annual Children’s Summer Reading Club (SRC) for Idea Exchange. Participates in SRC Student grant writing, hiring and supervision, SRC committee work and evaluation of program.

What You’ll Need to Succeed

To be qualified for and successful in the role, you should have:

  • Required – University Masters in Library Information Science or Information Studies
  • Required – Experience working in a public library –1 year
  • Required – Experience working with youth in a work environment – 6 months
  • Required – Experience working in a service environment – 6 months
  • Are highly-organized, and able to carry out job functions with flexibility, creativity and initiative
  • Strong analytical skills and a keen attention to detail
  • Excellent multitasking skills and ability to complete responsibilities on time
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, including the ability to explain complex technology to non-technical users
  • The ability to connect with people of all ages and offer hands-on assistance.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate professionally with internal and external partners
  • Has an inclusive and empathetic approach and a service-oriented mindset
  • A passion for supporting the diverse interests and needs of the Cambridge community

Pay: Salary range is $64,578 - $78,507 per year

Hours: 70 hours in a two-week period.

Schedule: Days, weekends and evenings may be required
