ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
The 1:1 Support Worker is responsible for providing assistance supervision and support 1-on-1 to a designated student during class, small group and independent learning time. Adopting a team approach to working within a collaborative environment with the Special Education and Learning Assistant Teacher and the classroom teacher, this position supports the designated student in the development of strategies to achieve academic, behavioural, cultural, and social goals in an inclusive learning environment and within their development IEP.
SELECT DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Provides 1:1 support to designated students during class, small group and independent learning times to reinforce teacher instruction inside and outside the classroom in the following areas:
Behaviour management
Resource preparation
Curriculum implementation
Social skills development
Deliver programming to designated students as identified by their IEP and inclusive education strategies, including individual learning activities with the goal of promoting increased independence and self-confidence in achieving success.
Exercise judgment in modifying student behaviour by re-directing, and providing positive reinforcement within pre-established guidelines
Collaborates with teachers and professionals who work with students to ensure they are achieving their IEP/behaviour plan/SMART goals
Collaborate with classroom staff under the guidance of the classroom teacher to support other learners at times when less help is needed for designated student.
Assist with the organization of the classroom as directed by the classroom teacher
Accompanying students on field trips
Maintains strict confidentiality and security of our students’ information and records
Notifies school administration of personal absence or a leave immediately to ensure suitable coverage can be arranged
Incorporates Haida content into interactions with students and school community
Participates in extra curricular and community functions, ongoing professional growth and learning. CMS recognizes the value of continuous learning and expects an active demonstration and proactive attitude towards self-improvement and skill enhancement that might include, workshops, webinars, or obtaining certifications relevant to the role.

YOU WILL BRING
Grade 12 level education or equivalent
Preference for Education Assistant and/or Community Support Certificate, but may accept an equivalent combination of training and experience
Training and experience in assisting in a classroom environment; including applying behaviour management strategies
Experience in working with First Nations students at the primary level
Knowledge of Haida culture an asset
Training in Level 1 First Aid, or the willingness to obtain certification
