Parks Lead Hand (Seasonal)

Hours of Work 40 hours per week
Rate of Pay $33.03 after probation
POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Parks Supervisor, the Parks Lead Hand oversees the City’s Parks Seasonal
Workers. Duties include supervising employees in one of the parks sports fields, gardening, or grass
cutting divisions.
KEY DUTIES PERFORMED:
1. Assist the Parks Supervisor and the Parks & Facilities Manager by providing leadership to all staff
with respect to the day-to-day operations of the Parks and Trails system, which includes delegating
work, establishing priorities, ensuring timelines and goals are achieved.
2. Leads a small team in general landscaping, maintenance, and grass-cutting of all municipal park
sites, gardens, leased grounds.
3. Maintain records of completed tasks such as grass cutting, equipment and vehicle maintenance.
4. Coordinates staff day-to-day priorities and ensures the equipment and materials necessary to
accomplish scheduled work are available.
5. Conduct trail, playground, skateboard park, tree inspections and property inspections along with
filling in completed reports.
6. Provide recommendation and advice to the Parks Supervisor for consideration for future projects.
7. Assess staffing needs and recommend solutions to the Parks Supervisor
8. Provide staff training, demonstrate, and instruct on methods / techniques needed to accomplish
assigned tasks.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES & SKILLS:
1. Valid Class 5 Driver's Licence
2. Grade 12 education or equivalent
3. Occupational First Aid Level 1 Certification
4. Considerable knowledge of equipment, tools, practices, materials, and methods related to
horticulture and landscaping.
5. Minimum 1.5 years supervisory experience.
6. Considerable knowledge of relevant safety regulations, policies, procedures, together with the ability
to introduce and implement new methods as they are developed or regulated.

7. Demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to provide clear direction to supervised employees.
8. Effectively supervise and coordinate the work of a group of employees.
9. The ability to perform all the duties outlined in a safe manner following established Facility
Procedures; Occupational, Health & Safety Rules; Violence in the Workplace policies; and Worksafe
BC Regulations, i.e. WHMIS, T.D.G.
DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS:
1. Completion of a minimum two-year post-secondary education program related to
horticulture/dendrology; or equivalent agricultural, arboriculture, dendrology, landscaping or
horticultural experience.
2. Supervisory experience related to horticulture or landscaping is an asset.
