2024 Inclusion Support Staff for Summer Camps & Playgrounds

Reporting to the Program Supervisor - Inclusion/ Program Director - Inclusion/Community Recreation Coordinator, the Inclusion Support staff are accountable for providing individual support and advocating for a children, youth, or young adults with special needs. They are responsible for developing and implementing a safe, enjoyable and diverse program for children, youth, and young adults with special needs that meets the participant’s specific support requirements. Inclusion Support staff attend to the care needs (feeding, toileting, clothing change, providing lifts and transfers, dispensing medication, etc.) of participants.

Key Duties

  • Develops and implements a daily action plan that will fully accommodate the support needs of your participant.
  • Develops weekly professional and participant specific actionable goals.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of adaptive programming for participants with special needs.
  • Attends to the care needs (feeding, toileting, clothing change, etc.) of participants with special needs. Maintains accurate washroom support documentation.
  • Dispenses and administers participant medication as required. Maintains accurate medication dispensing documentation.
  • Provides lifts and transfers for participants as required.
  • Provides behaviour management.
  • Takes appropriate action to deal with incidents/accidents and emergencies, as outlined in the departmental policies and procedures.
  • Works cooperatively and maintains ongoing and effective communication with participants, parents, colleagues, and supervisors.
  • Creates an environment that fosters a positive and inclusive program experience.
  • Creates an environment where participants strive to participate fully, perform to the best of their ability, and learn new skills.
  • May be required to work extended hours for before and after care from 7:15 a.m.-9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.-5:45 p.m. in addition to regularly scheduled hours.

Qualifications/Skills

  • Minimum high school diploma or equivalent or a combination of experience and education.
  • Minimum 9 months to 1 year of experience.
  • Experience working with children/youth/young adults with special needs (personal, professional, or volunteer).
  • Knowledge and experience related to the delivery of programs and services.
  • Special needs resource knowledge and programming skills.
  • Strong behaviour management skills.
  • Strong understanding of how to deliver personal care (clothing change, assistance in the washroom, etc.) to customers with dignity and safety.
  • Lifts and transfers training.
  • Ability to adapt existing programming to meet the needs of supported customers.
  • Ability to develop positive child relations.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds and stand for long periods of time.
  • Standard First Aid with CPR C (If hired, must be obtained by June 24, 2024).
  • HIGH FIVE - Principles of Healthy Child Development (If hired, must be obtained by June 24, 2024).
  • Ability to provide a current (within six months) Criminal Reference/Vulnerable Sector Check upon being hired.
  • You must be available to work full 8 weeks of summer and attend pre-summer mandatory training (Orientation, BMST, and Summer Staff Training).

Nice to Have

  • Post-secondary education in Recreation / Therapeutic Recreation / PSW/DSW / Social Work / Education program an asset.

What is Offered to Staff

  • Rate of Pay: $17.99 - $19.56 per hour.
  • Hours of Work: Monday to Friday, various shifts between 7:15 a.m. to 5:45 p.m.

  • Group Interview – April 6, 2024
  • Staff Orientation – May 27, 2024 or May 29, 2024
  • Summer Staff Training - June 15, 2024, June 24-27, 2024
  • Behaviour Management Systems Training – Full Certification – May 23, 2024, June 06, 2024 or June 11, 2024
  • Behaviour Management Systems Training – Recertification – May 07, 2024, May 14, 2024 or June 04, 2024
  • Camps / Playgrounds begin - July 2, 2024
  • Camps / Playgrounds end - August 23, 2024*
  • Contracts may be extended to end on August 30, 2024 for Camp Finale.

A final Interview Workshop will be held the week of April 29, 2024 for any vacant positions.
