Salary range : $1200/ week - based on experience
Reporting to: Camp Director

Qualifications:
● First Aid CPR C from St. John's Ambulance or Canadian Red Cross
● Vulnerable Persons Sector Police Check
● Studying in a related field and work/personal experience with children with neurobiological disorders is an asset, but not required.
● Additional certifications as required for different program areas as outlined below.
● NLS an asset but not required

Duties and Responsibilities for Organizing Activities:

Activity Area Description of Duties
● Inventory Art Room during staff training and at end of summer

Art ● Request supplies for purchase from Program Coordinators
● Develop 2-3 programs per session to be run with all cabins that are appropriate for the level of ability of each cabin group

● Inventory Drama Room during staff training and at end of summer

● Request supplies for purchase from Program Coordinators
Drama ● Develop 2-3 programs per session to be run with all cabins that are appropriate for the level of ability of each cabin group

● Coordinate all aspects of the Girls Camp Play during session 3 and 4 in conjunction with the Program Coordinators and the
Senior Staff Team

● Take inventory of all nature hut supplies during staff training and at end of summer

● Request supplies for purchase from Program Coordinators
Nature ● Work with Nature department team to care for all animals and model to campers and staff the proper care of different animals in the nature hut

● Lead Garden programs as required and be knowledgeable about the different plants in the garden- training provided

● Take inventory of all barn equipment during staff training and at end of summer

Sports ● Request supplies for purchase from Program Coordinators
● Develop 2-3 programs per session to be run with all cabins that are appropriate for the level of ability of each cabin group

● Take inventory of all high ropes equipment during staff training and at end of summer

● Request supplies for purchase from Program Coordinators
● Ensure safe operation of all camp high ropes elements and

High Ropes model safe practises to campers and staff
● Inspect all safety equipment prior to each use and report deficiencies to Program Coordinators
● Be familiar with OCA standards regarding high ropes courses and ensure compliance
Requires: CUI High Ropes Level 1 Training- reimbursed for course cost

● Run all boating rotations and choice activities as scheduled
● Refill the boats gas as needed
● Ensure all campers and staff wear PFDs while on the boat
● Be familiar with OCA standards regarding boating programs and

Boat ensure compliance
● Take inventory of all canoeing equipment during staff training and at end of summer
● Request supplies for purchase from Program Coordinators
● Develop 2-3 programs per session to be run with all cabins that are appropriate for the level of ability of each cabin group
● Be familiar with OCA standards regarding canoe programming and ensure compliance
● Take inventory of the swim shed and waterfront area during staff training and at end of summer
● Request supplies for purchase from Program Coordinators

Waterfront are appropriate for the level of ability of each cabin group

Coordinator/ Swim ● Oversee the administering of the swim test and ensure
Instructor compliance from campers regarding swim restrictions as appropriate
● Be familiar with OCA standards regarding waterfront operations and ensure compliance
Requires: NLS, Swimming Instructor certification an asset but not required

● Take inventory of the music room during staff training and at end
Music of summer

● Develop 2-3 programs per session to be run with all cabins that are appropriate for the level of ability of each cabin group

Qualifications and Experience

* Certifications based on position are as follows
● Lifeguard certification- NLS, First-aid / CPR,
● High ropes- ACCT/ CUI/ Adventureworks level I or II ( willingness to obtain )
● NCCP ( Coaching certificate) an asset
● Varsity level sports experience an asset
● Waterfront staff- ORCKA certification ( willingness to obtain)
● Hike leader certification
● ACMG- ( Association of Canadian Mountain Guide) certification

* certifications must be current. Financial assistance is available upon request and with prior approval. Certifications can be out of province if approved.

Additional Duties:
Along with be responsible for programs, you may also be responsible for day to day camper care which would include the following;

● Care for campers in designated cabins.
● Loving Support:

Counselors will at all times be positive, will create an emotionally safe environment, will plan and set kids up for success and will teach skills in teachable moments. If a counselor cannot be nor do these things in a given moment, they will request a break or switch.

● Supporting campers to have good hygiene by:

  • Brushing teeth twice a day for 2 minutes, once after breakfast, once before bed.
  • Washing or bathing once per day (hair and body)
  • Shaving (if necessary)
  • Feminine hygiene (if necessary)
  • Washing hands before meals and after using the washroom
  • Toileting (as necessary).

As soon as any accident is noticed, a camper’s clothing should be changed. If necessary he/she should take a shower before getting into new clothes. Counselors will be responsible for creating a plan to ensure a camper has the fewest accidents possible, which may include frequent trips to the bathroom.

● Laundry and Clothing:

  • Each counselor will unpack one or two children and ensure that all items are labeled. If clothes are not labeled, marking pens will be available to the counselor. At the end of each session, the counselor will assist in packing the campers’ belongings and ensure that all personal possessions are returned to the family.
  • Counselors will use the laundry machine to do emergency laundry where appropriate and ensure that no soiled clothing is sent home.

In the event that an accident happens right before departure, soiled clothing is to be placed in a separate plastic bag and the counselor is responsible for communicating that to the parents

● Managing a cabin’s welfare, safety and security by promoting a safe environment and responding to crisis using trained
Non-Violent Crisis Intervention techniques.

● Using collaborative problem solving and negotiation to maximize a camper’s engagement with the program.

  • During the hour in which something is planned, counselors should be actively attempting to get their camper to the activity.
  • During cabin time, counselors are to facilitate the creation of a plan to engage all members of a cabin in establishing activities which are to be safe and together. Counselors may participate in the planned activity and do everything they can to enrich the campers’ experience through appropriate supervision.
  • Counselors will provide support to activity staff whenever they can, to either run an activity, help set up and activity or help clean up an activity, coverage permitting.

Location and Hours
● Cabin Counselors will live onsite from June until the end of August
● Hours will vary during the time of employment at camp.
