Job description

Ontario College of Traditional Chinese Medicine (OCTCM) invites applications for the full-time / Part-time position as an instructor in our department of acupuncture. Potential courses that applicants may teach include: Meridians & Acupoints, Acupuncture Therapeutics, Acupuncture & Moxibustion, and TCM Microsystems. Here are a few course descriptions for reference:

  • Meridians & Acupoints I: This course covers the basics of the meridian system such as meridian theory, the physical location and anatomical landmarks of the meridian pathways, the nomenclature and pathways of the 12 main meridians, the internal pathways, and the 6 divisions of meridians and body areas.
  • Acupuncture and Moxibustion I: The first of the three acupuncture and moxibustion manipulation courses provides students with the theory and practice of various techniques. This includes preparation procedures for needling, safety standards, clean needle standards, hazard management, patient positioning and draping, insertion and withdrawal of needles, basic skills for promoting the qi arrival and the specially made needle skills (ex. intradermal needle, Plum Blossom or Seven Star needle, and three-edged needle (blood-letting)). Attention is paid to the clean needle techniques and general precautions and contraindications for needling. In the laboratory sessions, students practice these basic needling skills on a cushion first before attempting on the four limbs of the human body, using the most commonly used points with emphasis on needling angle and depth.

Job Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as advisor/mentor to students;
  • Provide examination questions for acupuncture courses;
  • Preparation of educational tools (A/V, demonstration models, lectures, lesson plans…etc.);
  • Preparation of demonstrations, lectures, and the selection of suggested and required reading from various sources;
  • Prepare evaluation tools that will aid in the evaluation of students’ work product and help to identify students that are discovered to be weak in various areas;
  • Must be available for work during the hours assigned, for student instruction; and
  • Accept other duties assigned/needed for the Institution’s needs.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A PhD and/or MD in acupuncture, TCM, or a related field;
  • 5 years of teaching experience;
  • 10 years of experience in a related field and
  • Demonstrated interest in teaching medical students
