Addictions Counsellor

Closing Date: February 2nd, 2024

1 Permanent position - Monday to Friday

Conditions of Employment:

-Must be legally entitled to work in Canada

-Must be able to bend, lift or move objects over 10 lbs.

Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the Program Manager and Director the Addictions Counsellor will provide individual or group support to clients struggling with drug, alcohol, gambling, and or eating disorders. Working closely with all support systems and from a First Nations cultural approach to healing and wellness to prevent relapse of clients at Makoon Transition Inc.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and facilitate educational holistic workshops on mental health and addiction related topics.
  • Provide mental health guidance regarding the cause, symptoms, and prevention strategies of various mental health diagnoses.
  • To be prompt and ready to work in a positive manner,
  • Follow all the rules, policies and regulations enforced by Makoon Transition Inc.
  • Time management for scheduled tasks, aware that lunch break is 30 minutes and two, 15 minute breaks.
  • Work professionally creating healthy relationships and do not cross unethical boundaries with clients and co-workers.
  • Be professional with other collaterals in the building, social workers, tenants and visitors.
  • Provide support regarding the use and effects of alcohol and drugs.
  • Prepare needs risk assessments and detailed reports monthly to Case Managers.
  • All drug testing to be done to support Case Managers.
  • Conduct and organize all food pick ups and community walks.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality guidelines regarding all clients, conversations, and referrals.
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of crisis management and the impact of trauma on mental health and addictions issues.
  • Awareness and sensitivity of First Nations with an understanding of issues facing families at risk.
  • Experience and knowledge of Provincial Foster Care Licensing Standards.
  • Experience in intake assessments and drug screening.
  • Knowledge of case management and report writing.
  • Attend and contribute to staff meetings for Makoon Transition Inc.
  • MUST have your own transportation to and from work.
  • Ensure no unapproved visitors enter the premises and all visitors sign in.
  • When responding to emergency or crisis situations and/or contact 911, Case Manager and Management.
  • Ensure no drugs, alcohol or illegal substances enter the building.
  • Respond to family’s questions or concerns with empathy and professionalism.
  • Encourage parents that children have a safe, healthy and clean environment.
  • Do not contribute or start Lateral Violence in any way or negative behavior.
  • Complete detailed reports upon completion of every shift.
  • Log in to and update client information on Makoon Transition Inc. Database.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualification:

  • Degree in social services with at least 2 years addiction counselling experience.
  • Complete certificate and experience with addictions prevention.
  • Strong understanding of the child welfare system.
  • Knowledge in teaching parenting techniques and strategies.
  • Experience in intake assessments and drug screening.
  • Experience and Knowledge of First Nations Families and community issues facing families at risk.
  • Valid Manitoba Class 5 Driver’s License and access to a vehicle.
  • CPR First Aid and de escalation training.
  • Mental Health First Aid
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention or TCS Training
  • Strong verbal, written and communication skills to articulate care plans to clients, support staff and professionals.
  • Able to follow all the policies, rules, missions and vision statements of Makoon Transition Inc. for the success of the families.
  • Strong organized and time management skills are a must to work with multiple families.
  • Must provide criminal record, adult and child abuse registry checks.
  • Agree to random drug testing for illegal substance use and alcohol for work safety.
