Adult Education Teacher & Learning Centre Coordinator

Summary:

We are seeking a dedicated and dynamic Adult Education Teacher to join our team in a remote First Nation community in Northern British Columbia. The ideal candidate will have a passion for education and a commitment to supporting adult learners in achieving their academic and personal goals within the context of Indigenous culture and community, with an emphasis on alternative and self-paced learning approaches. Additionally, coordination of the Learning Centre alongside the department head may be required.

Responsibilities:

· Develop and deliver engaging and effective lessons tailored to the needs of adult learners, incorporating Indigenous perspectives, knowledge, and cultural practices. Offer alternative pathways to learning that accommodate various learning styles and preferences, empowering students to take ownership of their education.

· Create a positive and inclusive learning environment that respects and honors Indigenous culture, language, and traditions, promoting student participation and success. Encourage self-directed learning and provide resources for independent study, recognizing the importance of autonomy and agency in Adult Education.

· Utilize a variety of instructional strategies and resources to accommodate diverse learning styles and abilities, while integrating Indigenous ways of knowing and learning. Embrace self-paced learning models that allow students to progress at their own speed, with personalized support and guidance as needed.

· Assess student progress and provide feedback to support ongoing learning and improvement, recognizing and valuing Indigenous forms of assessment and evaluation. Offer flexible assessment options that allow students to demonstrate their learning in ways that align with their cultural backgrounds and lived experiences.

· Collaborate with colleagues, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and support staff within the community to enhance the quality of education and student support services, fostering meaningful connections between formal education and Indigenous ways of life. Emphasize community-based learning opportunities that allow students to apply their knowledge and skills in real-world contexts.

· Maintain accurate records of student attendance, performance, and achievement, while respecting Indigenous protocols for data management and confidentiality. Offer ongoing support and encouragement to students as they work towards their educational goals, celebrating their achievements and milestones along the way.

· Coordinate the Learning Centre alongside the department head, overseeing day-to-day operations, scheduling, and resource management. Collaborate with staff to ensure the Learning Centre meets the needs of students and the community, providing a welcoming and supportive environment for learning.

· Stay informed about current trends and best practices in Adult Education and Indigenous education, incorporating relevant innovations into teaching practice while respecting traditional knowledge systems. Seek out professional development opportunities related to alternative and self-paced learning approaches, staying abreast of emerging research and strategies.

· Foster a supportive and respectful classroom community that values diversity and encourages active engagement in learning, drawing on Indigenous values of respect, reciprocity, and responsibility. Create opportunities for students to share their knowledge and experiences with one another, building a sense of community and mutual support.

· Provide guidance and support to students in setting and achieving their academic and career goals, while also supporting their cultural identity and connection to the community. Offer personalized advising and mentoring that takes into account each student's individual strengths, challenges, and aspirations.

· Participate in professional development activities to enhance teaching skills and knowledge, with a focus on Indigenous pedagogy, cultural competency, and reconciliation. Reflect on and refine teaching practices in response to student feedback and evolving community needs, demonstrating a commitment to continuous improvement.

Qualifications:

· Bachelor's degree in Education or a related field (Master's degree preferred).

· Valid teaching certification issued by the British Columbia Ministry of Education.

· Experience teaching adult learners in a formal educational setting, with a demonstrated understanding of Indigenous education principles and practices (preferred).

· Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with students, colleagues, and community members.

· Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and support staff within the community, while respecting Indigenous protocols and cultural norms.

· Knowledge of adult learning principles and effective teaching strategies, with a commitment to integrating Indigenous ways of knowing and learning.

· Familiarity with educational technology and digital learning tools, with a willingness to adapt teaching methods to suit the needs of the community.

· Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in education, with a focus on promoting Indigenous cultural revitalization and self-determination.

· Flexibility and adaptability in responding to the needs of adult learners and the community, with a willingness to embrace challenges and opportunities for growth.

· Dedication to ongoing professional growth and development, with a commitment to lifelong learning and continuous improvement within the context of Indigenous education.

Benefits

· Salary: $ 60, 000 - $100,000 depending on experience and education.

· Fully subsidized housing including rent and utilities

· Travel provided from point of hire to Tsay Keh Dene at start of contract, Christmas break and ending of contract

· 3 weeks paid time off at Christmas

· Sekani Awareness Cultural Week - school closed for 1 week in May for cultural participation

· Fully furnished housing (including bedding, couches, TV, dining room table and chairs, dressers, all major appliances)

· Up to date technology in each classroom

· Use of school 4x4 pickup truck, snowshoes, cross country skis, and a small workout facility.
