The Opportunity

Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer, the Intergovernmental Relations Advisor serves as a key liaison between the municipality and other levels of government, developing and maintaining strategic relationships to advocate Town of Caledon’s interests. Acting in a support role to the CAO and Leadership Team in pursuit of Strategic Plan and Council objectives, the Intergovernmental Relations Advisor will be well positioned to monitor and respond to related policy activity and to support advocacy for Council positions on matters as challenges and opportunities arise. This role involves effective communication, research, and policy analysis to support decision-making and ensure effective collaboration with various government entities.

As the Advisor, Intergovernmental Relations, you will perform the following duties, including but not limited to:

  • Develop and continually enhance a broad network of contacts and resources both within and outside the corporation, inter-municipally and at multiple levels of government (governmental officials, municipal associations, community agencies and other organizations).
  • Identify networking and participation opportunities for Council, the CAO and/or Leadership Team members.
  • Create and organize meetings, forums and senior level presentations to support the Council, CAO and Leadership Team in building relationships and advancing requests with Provincial and Federal Ministers and their senior political staff, local representatives (MP & MPP) and community organizations.
  • Participate regularly in provincial network forums, committees and workgroups to establish Caledon as a municipal leader.
  • Assist in the resetting of Town’s relationships with other regional partners to ensure effective alliances that will lead to greater collaboration on a variety of issues and equitable funding arrangements.
  • Explore, monitor, identify and report on policy and program developments in other jurisdictions that may impact Town service delivery on an ongoing basis.
  • Coordinate policy driven corporate projects and initiatives including the development of a formal advocacy planning framework and the implementation of a stakeholder relationship management model in conjunction with internal corporate communications resources.
  • Support and facilitate corporate research, policy development and strategic planning.

The Ideal Candidate

We are seeking an experienced professional with a post-secondary degree in Public Administration, Public Policy, Political Science or a closely related field. Our ideal candidate has 3-5 years of experience in advisory position in public sector environment.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated knowledge of current intergovernmental affairs, legislation, policies and trends. We are seeking an individual with superior understanding of the role of the CAO, Mayor/Council positions in a municipal environment and how to best support the related intergovernmental advocacy needs to ensure the success of the Town in this regard. The Ideal candidate should have extensive knowledge of public administration policy and practice at multiple levels of government and able to identify, develop and recommend solutions.

The successful candidate for Advisor, Intergovernmental Relations will be required to work a flexible schedule, including in the office, remotely and after hours (as required).

This position offers a salary range of $93,831.26 - $114,990.67 plus a competitive benefit package.
