The Opportunity

We are seeking one (1) full-time Animal Care Attendant who is responsible for routine duties to assist in the day-to-day husbandryof the animal collection, zoo operations and enhancement of the zoo visitor experience. Under general supervision, the incumbents will maintain the quality standards of accredited zoological practices.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to

  • Interact with Zoo visitors through Zoo Chats, seasonal exhibits, tours, etc.
  • Conducts live animal presentations to the public as directed.
  • Explain and enforce zoo regulations and policies.
  • Interact with visitors to provide information on new exhibits, births, daily programming, emergency procedures, location of washroom facilities, concessions, etc.
  • Respond to general inquiries from the public while still performing required work tasks.
  • Maintain cleanliness and a safe environment for visitors in assigned areas of the zoo.
  • Communicate with Visitor Services and Volunteer Resources regarding daily programming.
  • Provide daily animal husbandry and support zoo operations as directed.
  • Unload animal nutrition supplies; prepare and distribute animal diets.
  • Ensure animals have regular access to clean potable water.
  • Participate in animal handling and/or animal enrichment activities as directed.
  • Record daily observations of animal behavior, health, and welfare in accordance with industry standards and zoo policies and procedures.
  • Support in the preparation and creation of exhibit materials and public presentations.
  • Implement enrichment programs, including positive reinforcement training, in accordance with approved Behavioral Husbandry Policy.
  • Collaborate, promote and participate in conservation and research projects and/or initiatives.
  • Conduct research to keep up-to-date with zoo animal species, taxonomy, natural history, conservation, etc.
  • Clean exhibits and support maintenance in related Zoo areas as assigned.
  • Inspect assigned enclosures for any hazards to animals, keepers and public.
  • Maintain animal equipment and facilities; identify any maintenance required.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as required.

Qualifications Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Zoological Science, Wildlife Management or a related field.
  • A Zoo Technology Program certificate from Alberta Business and Educational Services (ABES) or comparable program would be an asset.
  • Must possess a valid Manitoba Class 5 Driver's License.
  • Basic technology and computer skills.
  • A minimum of two (2) years performing specialized seasonal labourer - Animal Care Attendant work or 2 years zoo experience in an accredited facility, with a good understanding of captive management and behaviours of a wide variety of domestic and wild animals.
  • Public speaking and/or community speaking experience.
