Job Description
Animal Protection Officers are Peace Officers appointed by the Province of New Brunswick who conduct comprehensive law enforcement investigations, contribute to public safety and improve the welfare of animals. Reporting to the Chief Animal Protection Officer, you will play an integral role in supporting the New Brunswick SPCA mandate to improve the quality of life for animals, as well as support partnering organizations in the Province of New Brunswick in the fair administration of justice.

An Animal Protection Officer’s work will include the investigation and enforcement of laws at the provincial and federal levels as it pertains to animal welfare and the administration of those laws. This position will also focus on education and awareness through public interaction and work with community members towards voluntary compliance on cases that involve complex dynamics.

Animal Protection Officers also work as Dog Control Officers. Dog control officers are appointed by the Province of NB under the Local Governance Act, Regulation 2022-36.

This is an excellent opportunity for experienced law enforcement officers as well as new officers with a desire to learn. This position requires strong inter-personal, communication and teamwork skills.

Formal Education, Training and Experience

  • Completion of Grade Twelve (12) or equivalent.
  • Completion of recognized enforcement training is an asset.
  • Training or experience in the safe handling of animals or dogs is an asset.
  • Valid NB Class 5 Driver’s licence.
  • Experience conducting investigations, in a legislative or regulatory manner is an asset.

Knowledge and Qualifications/Skills Required

  • The ability to respond to client/public inquiries and complaints and handle sensitive and confidential information in a trusted and responsible manner
  • The ability to travel and work flexible shifts, including evenings and weekends and be on call
  • Medically and physically fit to work in all weather conditions; may require bending, lifting and transporting animals in need.
  • As your career progresses, you’ll be required to complete courses or training in areas including but not limited to; Animal Protection; Entry Warrants, Search Warrants and the enforcement of various court orders; Officer Safety, Use of Force and Defensive Tactics; Advanced Investigative Techniques.
  • Providing dog Bylaw and Community Safety awareness, education, and prevention to the community and public
  • Providing dog bylaw enforcement services to towns and villages under contract with the New Brunswick SPCA
  • Must be able to work with other staff and the public in a positive, practical manner and be able to work with minimum supervision
  • Excellent computer skills , statement writing and preparing court documents
  • Will require a clean driver’s abstract
  • Will require a clean criminal records check to be eligible for appointment as a dog control officer as well as a provincial Peace Officer under Section 8 (1) of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act R.S.N.B.

Written and spoken competence in English is required. Proficiency in spoken French is considered an asset.
