Role Responsibilities

Do you have an educational background and a passion for teaching adult learners? Does the idea of delivering and developing training for the Government of Alberta (GoA) to empower and educate others excite you? Then the Application Trainer role may be for you!
The Ministry of Technology & Innovation is currently seeking your talent to fill a vacancy on the Training Services Team in the Infrastructure and Service Management branch. Working with a team of motivated individuals, the Application Trainer is pivotal to the success of delivering, creating, and improving application-based training in the GoA.
Reporting to the Training Coordinator, the Application Trainer develops, updates, and delivers training programs to the GoA. This position is key to providing training across the organization on a variety of custom, off-the-shelf, and productivity software applications (e.g. Microsoft 365 suite). The trainer should have a strong background in training. Expertise in training a wide range of software applications is preferred. The Application Trainer will work with a broad range of learners across the organization with diverse learning and accessibility needs. This position requires an agile and self-motivated trainer with a love for lifelong learning who can learn new applications and implement varied training approaches.
This position serves the entirety of the GoA to ensure organizational productivity, effectiveness, confidence, and adoption of software applications. It will require an ongoing understanding of the organization’s training needs, including providing guidance and developing custom training as required.
Key responsibilities include:

  • Scheduling and delivering interactive, live training sessions (online, virtual).
  • Researching, developing, and maintaining training materials and resources; including using multiple modes of delivering training through guides, videos, one-pagers, etc.
  • Assessing training needs and recommending training plans for Technology and Innovation-owned applications.
  • Supporting technology projects with custom training recommendations and advice.
  • Innovating and adapting training offerings and materials.
  • Providing excellent service and responsiveness to clients.
  • Manage changing and competing priorities.
  • Advocating for staff development and training by participating in Technology and Innovation and Government-wide initiatives.

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • University degree in Education, or a related discipline.
  • Two years of related experience in areas such as teachers aid, experience with curriculum development and lesson planning, training in virtual/classroom or large group settings.
  • A cover letter is required.

Equivalencies: Equivalencies are considered:

  • Related post-secondary diploma and four years of experience as stated above. Or
  • Learning professional certifications, such as CTDP, CompTIA CTT+ and five years of experience as stated above. Or
  • A high school diploma and six years of related experience as stated above.


Assets:

  • Learning professional certifications, such as CTDP, CompTIA CTT+
  • Solid understanding of adult learning principles.
  • Understanding of IT systems, with sufficient detail to teach technical staff. Tools may include Excel, Power Pivot, Power BI, ServiceNow, among others. Concepts include Agile development, IT service management, and other similar functions related to service management.
  • Experience in using a variety of tools and technologies for teaching in a virtual environment and troubleshoot independently.
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills.
  • Expertise in drafting and presenting compelling training material.
  • Experience with video training software such as Camtasia and/or Adobe Captivate.
  • Ability to work with a project team or business area to understand unfamiliar processes and procedures and adapt them into training.

This position is eligible for remote work. You must reside in Alberta, to work remotely.
