Raytheon ELCAN is continuing its commitment to invest in the development of our employees. We are looking for positive, detail oriented individuals with a commitment to quality and further education. The Apprenticeship program is a 4 year commitment that will include scheduled rotations in the workplace to achieve 8000 hours, attending school through an Ontario College General Machinist course and writing all applicable tests to achieve a Certificate of Qualification. All applicants will be required to go through an Apprenticeship Aptitude Test and Interview process.
Apprentices will have the responsibility to develop knowledge in a variety of processes such as cleaning and beveling of spherical optics. Apprentices will be introduced to dome scooping, dome generating, manufacturing of work holding devices, understanding and applying the concepts of work holding devices for dome grinding and polishing. Maintaining and correcting grinding tools, cast iron tools, and pitch polishing tools will be learned. Upon completion the apprentice will have a complete understanding and application of interferometry and all relevant measuring equipment. They will learn the ability to see, recognize and interpret optical surface quality requirements across all regularly used standards, perform all manual operations applicable to Dome Manufacturing as well as bevel and edge chip recognition, control and repair. This apprenticeship is registered with Skilled Trades and apprentices will receive Certificate of Apprenticeship for Optics Technician (Lens & Prism Maker) (225A )

Requirements/Key Competencies

- Utilizing technical resources and applying them effectively, and keeping up to date with the latest developments in new technologies to assess their possible application (and/or ensure their successful implementation) within the work place.

- Applying problem solving skills within the work place.
- Possess the ability to adapt to deadlines, heavy workloads, and sudden or frequent changes in priority in order to accomplish objectives.
- Acquiring and demonstrating knowledge of safety and health procedures.
Educations and Technical Requirements:
- O.S.S.D. or equivalent education required.
- Knowledge of the metric system would be an asset.
- Drawing Interpretation and general knowledge of GD&T is required and would be an asset.
- Good math skills required and would be an asset.
- Must have good finger dexterity.
- Familiarity with operation of machine shop equipment.
- Knowledge of standard measuring equipment and measuring practice would be an asset.
- Experience in handling of optical components would be an asset.
- Exposure to computer software, MS Word, Excel and AutoCAD would be an asset
