Duties
Your role in this position will be to support the Wet Lab manager in maintaining the mechanical systems which are essential for research at SABS. You will carry out system maintenance, upgrade design and install plumbing solutions for specialized systems to meet research needs. Over time, you will develop skills that will allow you to operate the complex modern control systems, trouble shoot problems and create system adaptations to allow novel research to happen. You will work closely with project staff to ensure animal care and welfare requirements for the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) for care and data recording and reporting are met. You will be required to participate in animal husbandry and sampling events. Additionally, you will work within the Facilities Science Unit as SABS and will work in a team environment with technical staff, research leads, and managers.

To staff a temporary vacancy at St. Andrews Biological Station. Results from this selection process may be used to staff temporary or permanent EG-04 positions in St. Andrews or Mactaquac, New Brunswick.

Degree equivalency
- Experience inputting, validating, maintaining, and summarizing data on a computer.
- Experience maintaining, operating or troubleshooting infrastructure or equipment (e.g., power tools, plumbing, scientific equipment).
- Experience assisting in repairs and upgrades to mechanical systems.
- Experience in reading and preparing line drawings and simple schematics of mechanical systems.

- Experience using and maintaining mechanical equipment to assess water quality (such as; salinity, oxygen and pH meters, osmometers, tensionometers) for fish or invertebrates.
- Experience with building control or process control systems (e.g Delta, Siemens, etc.).
- Experience with programming (e.g. SQL, HTML, R, Delta, python, or any other).
- Experience with Programmable Logic Control systems.
Conditions of employment
Reliability Status security clearance
- Valid Health Canada Medical.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Work flexible hours and overtime as required.
- Work on weekends and holidays to provide care to live fish and invertebrates.
- Work in cold and wet conditions in the lab and field.
- Physical capability of lifting awkward loads to a maximum of 10 kg (~20 pounds).
- Must report to work at the biological station – no telework.
