Short-term contract (possibility of renewal)
We are seeking qualified Researcher candidates located in Ottawa for opportunities opening over the next several months. Although some assignments may be undertaken remotely, candidates must be able to work in Ottawa at Library and Archives Canada, other archival facilities, or at federal government client facilities as required.
Position Summary
Under the direction of the Research Manager and Project Manager, the Researcher is responsible for undertaking research services for projects. This role performs various research level tasks including undertaking file review of departmental and archival records, document and file summary writing, and report writing. This role will also be responsible for performing quality control activities including reviewing and editing of data to ensure accuracy and adherence to the protocols and standards.
Major Responsibilities and Duties
- Conduct primary and secondary records research
- Identify and review relevant files and documents using electronic databases and finding aids
- Compile templated research reports
- Extract information from documents to be entered into a database
- Code documents into case-specific databases
- Perform document production tasks, including assembly of binders, labeling, scanning and archiving documents into collections
- Perform quality control review on scanned images and tombstoned records
- Prepare regular status/progress reports
Mandatory Experience and Qualifications
- BA in Law, the Humanities, or Social Sciences with specializations in disciplines such as History, Public History, Indigenous Studies, or Anthropology
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience conducting primary records research and report writing
- Minimum 1 year of experience researching Canadian Indigenous historical issues
- Experience conducting research related activities (other than database research) in a relevant field
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to write analytical reports and other research documents
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team
- Ability to engage in training, follow directions, meet deadlines, and follow systematic reporting protocols
- Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Word and Excel
- Experience using academic literature databases and the internet for directed searches
- Ability to engage in problem solving as a member of a research team
- Eligible to obtain PWGSC security clearance
Additional Desired Experience and Qualifications
- Any combination of experience in: Canadian Civil Litigation; Canadian Aboriginal Historical, Demographic, Socio-Economic, Policy Governance, Aboriginal & Treaty Rights, Indigenous Studies, and/or Canadian Heritage research and reporting
- Experience working at Library and Archives Canada
- Experience working with databases in a research or business environment;
- Litigation experience is preferred; especially in e-Discovery
- Holds PWGSC Secret security clearance
Job Types: Full-time, Part-time
Salary: $49,281.58-$75,034.12 per year
Expected hours: 10 – 37.5 per week
