Scope
The City of Surrey is hiring an Artistic Director (CSC 2) for the 2024 season of its Re-enactors Program. This role is a flexible, part time auxiliary position that reports to the Manager of Performing Arts who oversees Surrey Civic Theatres and the Manager of Heritage Services. The Re-enactors are a professional, award-winning heritage re-enactment troupe that delights crowds all spring and summer long offering authentic and intriguing stories from Surrey's past. Performances are lively, educational, and include memorable audience interactions. All program characters are based on real people from Surrey's past, and the events that shaped their lives in Surrey. The program provides a dynamic and accessible inroad to Surrey's history. The Artistic Director (CSC 2) position is responsible for directing the actors and for scheduling and coordinating performances at various events in Surrey through spring/summer and fall.
Responsibilities
Duties will include but not be limited to, the following:
    • Contract, schedule and arrange payment for actors and stage manager through CAEA (Canadian Actors' Equity Association). • Contract, schedule, and arrange payment for Costumer and Music Director. • Pre-rehearsal preparation of scripts, direct actors in rehearsals for the start of the season and rehearsals before each event. • Provide ongoing evaluation and direction for actors and staff as needed during the season. • Collaborate artistically with the Music Director and Costumer for each performance as needed. • Liaise with event organizers in preparation for performances at their events, establish scheduled times and site location for performances. • Arrange rental of a truck for set/prop/costume/sound equipment transportation to and from events, and cleaning of costumes after events. • Oversee load in, set up, and performances at events; help to ensure they are set up correctly and performances run smoothly. • Assist with social media promotion and city eNewsletter marketing for the program. • Monitor and manage program's yearly budget.
Qualifications
    • Physical work as required with some exposure to changing environments.
    • Will be required to work a flexible work schedule.
    • Strong interpersonal skills and leadership abilities.
    • Highly developed skills in written communication and report writing.
    • Strong oral communication and public relations skills.
    • Knowledge and experience in theatre programming, production, and administration.
    • Familiarity with basic computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
    • Effectively plans, assigns, and supervises the work of others.
    • General knowledge of financial/budget management.

Education and Experience:
    • University or college level graduation in theatre or a related discipline.
    • 3-5 years of progressively responsible experience.
    • An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
    • Must have technical experience and expertise applicable to the specific role.
    • Valid BC driver's license.
