The City of Port Moody has an exciting opportunity for an experienced and innovative Assistant Manager of Recreation to help lead our Recreation team.
Reporting to the Manager of Recreation, the Assistant Manager of Recreation will serve as a key member of the City's Recreation management team responsible for overseeing and leading the coordination, development and management of Recreation programs and services.
- Participate in the long-range planning, development and implementation of Recreation services and strategies;
- Provide leadership to a team of Recreation supervisory staff, planning and directing the work of individual employees and work teams to ensure efficient services and updated processes, and participating in recruitment and performance management for this team;
- Research and evaluate the recreation and leisure interests of the community and assist with the direction of program development;
- Develop effective working relationships with internal staff, contractors, patrons, and community groups; resolves escalated complaints and issues;
- Responsible for adequate scheduling and in-service, safety training and orientation of assigned staff;
- Assist in preparing capital and operating budgets and monitors as assigned;
- Draft Council and Committee reports, presentations, and other correspondence for manager review (and review reports submitted by subordinates);
- May participate in Council Advisory Committees and internal committees; and
- Act for the Manager of Recreation, when required and may act as a designate as Deputy Director Emergency Social Services in the absence of Manager of Recreation.
Basic Qualifications:
- Diploma or degree in Recreation, Sports Management, Kinesiology or a related field
- Minimum three years of related experience in a recreation supervisory / management capacity, preferably in a municipal setting, with responsibility for recreation programming in a variety of program areas, including staff supervision and facility management
- Significant experience within a unionized environment in staff supervision; workforce planning; managing budgets; staff recruitment and training; and conflict resolution
- Knowledge of a variety of different recreation program areas, leisure services, and operations, including community recreation principles, practices, and objectives
- Knowledge of budget preparation and control
- Ability to take initiative, exercise good judgement and work independently and as part of a team
- Effective oral and written communications skills, including report writing and presentation skills
- Strong problem solving and conflict resolution skills with an ability to facilitate, negotiate, and build consensus with staff teams, the public, and other related groups
- Sound knowledge of Recreation facility regulations, bylaws, and health and safety practices
- Demonstrated leadership and team building competencies
