Job description

Vancouver Island University invites applications for the role, Associate Dean, Health Sciences and Human Services.

 

The Associate Dean is part of the decanal administrative team, focusing on activities that permit the smooth and efficient running of the Dean's office. The Associate Dean will work with departmental and faculty committees and must have an extensive knowledge of programs and program evaluations; and an understanding of university governance and experience working in a unionized environment (VIUFA, BCGEU, and CUPE).

 

Under the direction of the Dean, the Associate Dean is responsible for tasks and areas identified by the Dean including academic planning and implementation, budget development and monitoring, and organizing and management functions that facilitate successful working relationships with faculty, staff, communities, and university administration. The Associate Dean assists the Dean and Program Chairs to develop new initiatives. Student and program success is fostered through the support provided by the Associate Dean. This involves working with other institutional areas including Student Affairs, the Office of Enrolment Management, and International Education, by initiating new strategies for student engagement and managing student concerns and appeals.

 

The Associate Dean's key responsibilities include:

  • Work in support of the Dean and as acting Dean when required, including attending Provost Council and President's Council;
  • Chair Faculty, Faculty Council, Chairs, and associated Advisory Committees;
  • Work with various internal and external individuals and groups to plan, implement, monitor, and evaluate contract activity to complement existing activities in the faculty;
  • Provide oversight for academic program quality and delivery;
  • Support the Dean in summative program assessment, accreditation, and program review work;
  • Working closely with the Finance Assistant, provide budget support to the Dean and Faculty, including budget development, monitoring, and expenditure control;
  • Manage student and faculty issues that come to the Dean's office;
  • Chair faculty search committees, in consultation with HR as necessary;
  • Coordinate the hiring, orientation, and supervision of program assistants and equipment/supply clerks;
  • Work with Human Resources to ensure the provisions of collective agreements and University policies are observed, advise faculty and staff of policies and practices as required;
  • Represent the Dean and Faculty within and outside the university;
  • Initiate new strategies for student engagement;
  • Initiate and provide support for viable cost recovery and revenue generation activities;
  • In consultation with the Dean and others, ensure the effective and efficient use of resources and infrastructure (including classrooms, labs, and offices) in support of VIU's mission and Academic Plan;
  • Support the development of discipline specific and interdisciplinary programs to strengthen and diversify opportunities for students consistent with the Academic Plan;
  • Support the development and oversight of applied research and development projects with external partners including First Nations, industry, government, NGOs, university and community partners.

 

About the Faculty:

The Faculty of Health Sciences and Human Services includes the Departments of Child and Youth Care, Dental Assistant, Dental Hygiene, Early Childhood Education and Care, Health Care Assistant, Nursing, Practical Nursing, Social Work, Education Assistant and Community Support, and a Professional Development and Training department.

 

The mission of the Faculty is to foster student success and develop and maintain relevant, responsive, and stimulating learning opportunities that are community-based, globally and locally, and offered in a visionary, interprofessional environment that is conducive to learning and promotes health and wellness for all. The Dean and the Dean's Office lead, manage, administer and support the instructional, scholarly and outreach activities of the Faculty on four campuses with this mission in mind.

 

Required Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have a doctorate or terminal degree in a related discipline from an appropriately accredited institution, or the equivalent combination of a Masters' degree and professional and post-secondary experience, and a minimum of five years post-secondary experience along with a record of scholarly activity including collaborative research projects with university, industry, government, NGOs, communities, or First Nations.

 

Excellent written and oral presentation skills; ability to create and maintain a positive, learning-centred work environment; demonstrated team building/maintenance skills; demonstrated change managements skills and abilities; demonstrated expertise in program development and/or curriculum within a post-secondary context.

Ability to provide senior leadership in a diverse Faculty, and within a multi-union environment.

Demonstrated abilities with proposal writing and applied research activity; demonstrated ability to be entrepreneurial and innovative with respect to academic programming, student training and experiential learning as well as research opportunities.
