Pikangikum Allied Health Services (PAHS)

Position Description:

Under the direction of the Pikangikum Allied Health Manager and Pikangikum Education Authority (PEA), the Audiologist will work to help organize and deliver Audiology services in the Pikangikum Allied Health Services (PAHS) program and the broader Pikangikum community. This position will be located from a primary office in Winnipeg, as well as travel monthly to Pikangikum First Nation to conduct assessments, develop implement treatment plans, deliver education and training, work collaboratively with other agencies and partners, participate in interdisciplinary meetings and provide guidance and to other PAHS staff and PEA staff.

Responsibilities will Include:

  • Work closely with the Learning Resource Team at Eechokay Birchstick School and the other Allied Health Team members to identify students with hearing impairments
  • Participate, design and implement a tele-audiology program
  • Conduct assessment of the audiological needs of the children in the school and in community setting
  • Implement appropriate strategies to address these needs taking into account indigenous culture
  • Ensure all testing and diagnostic assessment instruments and tools are reviewed and adapted where possible, and are culturally appropriate for use among indigenous children
  • Set up hearing clinics and established test protocols, hearing aid fitting and dispensing guidelines
  • Develop and implement individualized plans
  • Monitor and follow up of plans
  • Work collaboratively with other members of the interdisciplinary teams that includes tutor escorts and other professional staff such as teachers, speech and language therapists, physiotherapist, occupational therapist, support staff, special education resource teacher and school administration
  • Counsel clients and their families on ways listen and communicate
  • Assist in the overall development of the PAHS program;
  • Understanding of Auditory training and rehabilitation programs and implementation of these programs in the school and community where possible
  • Supervise and train students, communication disorder assistants, rehabilitation assistants, audiometric technicians and hearing aid dispensers
  • Develop training materials and tools for staff, students and caregivers/parents
  • Conduct training sessions and professional development sessions as needed
  • Ensure that proper case records, assessment reports, statistical records and all other data to each case is maintained and confidential.
  • Maintain and inventory of all equipment
  • Develop working relationship with all manufacturers and suppliers of amplification devices and audiology equipment to ensure equipment is up to date and calibrated and devices are utilizing the most current technology
  • Work under the policies of the Pikangikum Education Authority.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or doctorate degree (AU.D) in Communications Disorders with a specialization in Audiology
  • Experience working with children with complex physical, cognitive, mental, behavioral or social issues
  • A licensed member in good standing with the College of Audiologists and Speech Language Pathologists in Manitoba and Ontario or be willing to registered with colleges
  • Assistive Devices Program (ADP) Authorizer or dispenser
  • Experience fitting and dispensing FM systems and hearing aids
  • Understanding of Otoacoustic Emission testing and ability to administer and interpret test results
  • Ability to conduct Auditory Processing Assessments using a variety of Auditory processing tests
  • Excellent counselling skills
  • Understanding of Indigenous culture
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills as well as strong team and independent working skills;
  • Excellent written and oral communication and well-developed interpersonal skills;
  • Strong technical/computer skills;

Also required:

Recent Criminal and Vulnerable Sector Check will be Required

And a current driver’s license
