Job description

Auxiliary Firefighters assist our Career Firefighters at major incidents. Auxiliaries can be called out day or night to assist with structure fires, grass and interface fires as well as emergency incidents such as flooding, windstorms and gas line breaks. Auxiliaries also assist with community fire prevention and life safety programs. This is a great way to be involved in the community!

We will train you to the provincial standard during our mandatory monthly training day (every 3rd Saturday), and you will be expected to do some online course work as well.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Completion of Secondary School.
  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Currently reside or work in or near Penticton.
  • Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
  • Valid BC Driver's License (Minimum Class 5).
  • Driver's Abstract that exhibits safe and responsible driving habits (must provide Drivers' Abstract).
  • Committed to maintaining personal fitness and a healthy lifestyle.
  • Criminal Record Check that displays no convictions for criminal offences related to the job of an Auxiliary Firefighter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous Firefighting experience.
  • Can respond to daytime emergencies.
  • First Aid Training.
  • Ability to swim.
  • Significant focus on physical health and avoidance of substances.
  • Post-secondary Education or Training (i.e. academic, technical, trades).
  • Related work experience.

Please note that successful incumbents will be expected to:

  • Reside within the fire protection area or within a municipality adjacent to the COP boundary.
  • Complete at minimum, a provided exterior firefighter training course.
  • Attend 70% of all practices and 30% of emergency call outs.
  • Be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all staff working within the COP fire department and deal with the public in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Be capable of meeting the physical demands of the position.

SELECTION PROCESS (scheduled over 4 weeks):


Step 1: Application -
POSTING CLOSES SUNDAY MARCH 17, 2024

The application will be accepted online only (no paper applications) for a specified date. Candidates must submit their resume, cover letter and copies of qualifications prior to the job posting closing date. If the Driver's Abstract and Criminal Record Check cannot be completed prior to the job posting closing date, please note they are in process in your cover letter.


Step 2: Application Review

Applications will be reviewed, and only successful candidates will be advised that they will be proceeding to the next step of the competition. The Driver's Abstract and Criminal Record Check will need to be received prior to Step 3.


Step 3: Written Test (general aptitude exam) -
SATURDAY APRIL 6, 2024

The written exam results will be reviewed, and Candidates will be advised whether or not they will be proceeding to the next step of the competition.


Step 4: Candidate Physical Ability Test - SATURDAY APRIL 27, 2024

Before the day of the Physical Ability Test we will require a doctor's note confirming you are physically fit to be tested as an Auxiliary Firefighter. In addition, a Waiver will need to be signed prior to the fitness test.


Step 5: Candidate References

Successful candidates will be asked for References if an offer is under consideration.


Step 6: Employment Offer Letter Extended

If References are acceptable, an employment offer letter will be extended with a start date and training schedule.
