Job Summary
Apply your sound judgement and analytical skills in a key leadership role
The Office of the Chief Forester has the mandate for forest stewardship and sustainability for the Province of British Columbia within the Ministry of Forests (FOR). The responsibility extends to ensuring the province's forests and forest values are managed in accordance with government's expressed priorities for balancing a complex array of interests. The focus is to maintain and restore a healthy environment and economic sustainability for the Province of B.C.
The Office of the Chief Forester is responsible for the provincial forest analysis and inventory, tree improvement and forest genetics programs, forest ecosystem management, fire stewardship, forest health, natural resource research and science, innovation, bioeconomy, forest carbon management, and response to climate change for BC Forests.
Job Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in a field related to Forestry, Resource Management, or equivalent.
  • Currently registered as a BC Professional Forester, or immediately eligible to register as a BC Professional Forester.
  • Considerable knowledge of natural resource principles and practices of sustainable resource management, forest landscape planning, AAC determination principles, current and emerging resource management issues, and the biophysical sciences, which includes at least five (5) years' experience in the following areas:
    • Making decisions that have strategic impacts and outcomes that will significantly advance the socio-economic agenda of the province.
    • Making decisions that have extensive long-term impact for ministry or government-wide implications and is accountability for strategic decisions and defined outcomes.
    • Operating in a senior management capacity including business, organizational planning, procurement, and financial management.
    • Dealing with politically sensitive and provincially significant issues, and with developing policy, procedures, and corporate practices.
    • Working with First Nations as rights holders.

Preference may be given to applicants who have proven experience with:
  • Briefing, presenting, and making recommendations to senior political officials.
  • Representing a ministry at provincial, national, and international forums.
  • Leading and coaching diverse teams.
