BATHURST EMERGENCY HOMELESS SHELTER MANAGER
We are currently seeking a dynamic individual to manage the Bathurst Emergency Homeless Shelter. The Bathurst Emergency Homeless Shelter (BES) works to help individuals experiencing homelessness. The shelter staff are a group of dedicated individuals who all come from different backgrounds and have had different experiences, but who all maintain the best interests of the residents. We operate under the trust that our shelter is not simply four walls and a heating system. For our residents, we are their temporary home and a safe space to sort out their challenges during a vulnerable period in their lives.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Main Functions:
- Provides leadership to Resident Support Workers through example and guidance;
- Manages the day-to-day shelter activities and supports the Executive Director and Coordinated Access Officer in their roles.
Reports to: Executive Director, Assistant Director and Coordinated Access Officer
Duties:
Leadership:
- Creates an environment for the success of staff and residents
- Works collaboratively with and supports all BES staff, volunteers, other appropriate service providers/agencies and residents
- Facilitates/attends Shelter meetings and intra agency meetings as needed, creating and maintaining open, effective lines of communication
- Takes part in the selection and interview process of new staff
- Provides guidance, training and regular direct supervision of staff
- Schedules staff, always ensuring appropriate staffing levels, and with consideration for time off and training
- Ensures adherence to BES Mission and Mandate, Policy & Protocols, Manuals and Handbooks and liaises with Executive Director with regards to any required revisions
- Ensures appropriate reporting via Shift Logs, Medication Logs, Resident Files, HIFIS, etc.
- Submits accurate, weekly payroll/schedules information and various monthly and quarterly reports
- Collects. Manages and submits resident service fees and monetary donations to the Executive Director
Training & Development:
- Responsible for effective staff orientation and training, both individual and team, identifying areas for development as they arise
- Liaises with Assistant Director and Executive Director to ensure all staff evaluations are up to date and ensures staff receive recognition for excellence and achievements to foster on-going growth and development
Resident Focus:
- Creates an environment of support for Residents, enabling Residents to feel safe on entering the shelter
- Takes part in periodic resident reviews with Coordinated Access Officer and Executive Director, Outreach and other service providers as appropriate to facilitate effective transitioning for Residents.
Community Liaison:
- Responds to community enquiries and represents BES in the community, accepting donations, and attends various community events and other BES activities to support staff and residents where appropriate and as able.
- Liaises and maintains a relationship with other Service Providers to update and promote BES services
Working Conditions:
- Flexibility regarding shift schedule and work hours is required, with occasional work outside of regularly scheduled hours as needed. Typically shifts will be Monday – Friday from 8 am – 4 pm
- Meal and lunch breaks must be taken on location, unless staff coverage is available and/or shelter is closed
- Ability to work calmly in highly charged situations and with residents experiencing crises
Employment Requirements:
- Degree/Diploma in related Social Sciences or 5 years’ experience in a related field
- 3+ years Management or Supervisory experience
- Strong leadership abilities and management skills
- Ability to supervise 5-10 employees
- Understanding of and commitment to BES values, mission and vision
- Ability to plan and implement change
- Goal orientated, able to plan and delegate
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills
- Computer literate – Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.
Desirable:
- Up to date Workplace Standard First Aid/CPR Level C with AED Certificate
