The Carnivore Conservation Biologist reports to the Carnivore Conservation Specialist within the Species Conservation Science Unit, Conservation Science Section at the Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship. The Species Conservation Unit focuses on conserving the biodiversity of B.C and developing guidance to mitigate threats. The focus of this unit is to prevent species from becoming at risk and recovering species already assessed as at-risk. Members in this unit/section are involved in conducting applied research to address key knowledge gaps, developing science informed policy, guiding implementation of conservation and recovery actions, developing best management practices to mitigate threats, and assessing effectiveness of recovery and mitigation measures.
The Carnivore Conservation Biologist will work with an extensive network of partners including other ministries, local, other provincial and federal governments, First Nations, academia, and non-government organizations. Specifically, this position is responsible for coordinating science advice on issues associated with Carnivore Conservation and management to decision makers, regional biologists, qualified professionals, and the public.
To coordinate and implement research, conservation, restoration and monitoring projects, and coordinate stewardship projects focusing on carnivores at risk and their natural habitats, as well as urban, agricultural and/or forest/grassland settings in British Columbia. To develop and implement research, conservation, and enhancement projects for carnivores.

Job Requirements:
Education and Experience:
  • Registered (or eligible) as a Registered Professional Biologist (RP Bio) in B.C. with the College of Applied Biology within six months of employment. Note: Immediately eligible is defined as being registered as a Professional Biologist (RP Bio) with the College of Applied Biology within 6 months of appointment. Confirmation of registration/eligibility will be required before an offer of employment can be confirmed. If you are not currently registered, advise how you have confirmed with the CAB that you are immediately eligible.
  • Master's degree in a related science field (e.g. biological sciences, ecology, natural resources management or related discipline) and three (3) years of related experience; OR
  • Bachelor's degree in a related science field (e.g., biological sciences, ecology, natural resources management or related discipline) AND four (4) years of related experience.

*Related Experience must include:
  • Experience managing Carnivore Conservation projects (including design, funding, implementation, budget management and contracting). (Note: All these project elements need to be met, but not necessarily on the same project).
  • Experience in providing science and technical advice to managers, mediating solutions, and making decisions in natural resource management within and/or outside government.
  • Experience in conducting mesocarnivore monitoring and assessments, including population modelling.
  • Combined experience in the following:
    • writing and/or reviewing funding applications and/or partnership agreements.
    • data management, synthesis, and reporting.
    • communicating complicated scientific concepts in a simple way to the general public, and/or government executives, orally and in writing.
    • working in a field-based environment.
    • interpreting and applying environmental management policies and/or regulations.

Preference may be given to applicants with the following:
  • Candidates with British Columbia mesocarnivore experience. (*Note: experience working with mesocarnivores outside of British Columbia should not preclude one from applying for the position).

If you are not yet registered with the CAB, please explain how you are immediately eligible (i.e. currently a Registered Professional Biologist (RPBio) member in good standing in another Canadian jurisdiction and can immediately transfer to the CAB).

Currently there is 1 temporary opportunity available until March 31, 2025.
This position can be based in any Water, Land, and Resource Stewardship office. The locations listed above are to assist applicants in searching for this opportunity and are not a complete list of locations.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to two (2) days at home per week as per the Telework Agreement.
