Job Summary
Influence complex natural resource initiatives
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Aquatic Ecosystems Branch and take a key role in the delivery of Government's enhanced mandate for healthy and resilient aquatic ecosystems. This foundational work supports ongoing improvements in sustainable resource management along with priority initiatives including watershed security, species recovery, and salmon restoration. Within the Branch, the Aquatic Conservation Science Section leads science and research initiatives that improve the collective understanding of our province's species and ecosystems, their status, and threats. The unit's work is instrumental in directly informing priority provincial and regional scale management decisions addressing threats to aquatic species and ecosystems of conservation concern. Reporting to the Aquatic Invasive Fauna Specialist, this position plays a lead role in developing and implementing projects to mitigate the threat of aquatic invasive fauna.
More specifically, the Project Biologist will lead the coordination and implementation of high priority aquatic invasive fauna management projects. An initial key focus for this position will be coordinating and implementing a project to mitigate the threat of smallmouth bass to species at risk in Cultus Lake. A central component of this position will be field based and will involve working with an extensive network of partners including inter-ministerial and non-government organizations. This position requires strong project management and organizational skills for implementing technical projects. This position will also be responsible for data synthesis, analysis and reporting for projects based on natural resource management.

Job Requirements:
  • Degree in biological sciences or equivalent.
  • Registered (or eligible) as a Registered Professional Biologist (RP Bio) in B.C. with the College of Applied Biology within six months of employment.
  • Experience in conducting environmental monitoring and assessments.
  • Experience working in a field based environment (with a preference for aquatic environments).

Preference may be given to applicants with the following:
  • Experience working with aquatic invasive species.
  • Backpack and boat electrofishing certification.
  • Experience managing and coordinating projects.
  • Experience communicating effectively with diverse groups of partners and stakeholders.

Provisos
  • Valid B.C. driver's licence.
  • Meet safety standards of Work Safe BC.
  • May require the operation of a variety of equipment.
  • Conducts field work which may include the following: travel to remote areas by vehicle, boat, air or foot, overnight or extended stay in rough camp conditions and outdoor work in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to carry equipment and supplies in difficult terrain.
