Job Summary

The Aquatic Ecosystems Branch leads the development of strategic conservation policy, science, and assessments for native species and ecosystems. The Branch is responsible for developing science-based strategic frameworks, standards, policies, legislation/regulation, and guidance for species and ecosystems and setting priorities for conservation and recovery of species and ecosystems that guide the Natural Resource Sector (NRS). The Branch also provides aquatic conservation science leadership with a team of scientists that specializes in improving our collective understanding on our province's species, biodiversity and ecosystems, their status, and threats including climate change, water use, invasive animal species and habitat change.
This position provides conservation science expertise focusing on Aquatic Species of conservation concern. The incumbent will work with provincial government partners, as well as partners from other governments (federal, First Nation and others as appropriate) on recovery-focused applied science, species/population assessments and advice to decision makers to support the conservation of Aquatic Species at Risk and ecosystems of concern. The position will also either represent the provincial government, or support other government representatives, at provincial and national science-based forums such as COSEWIC (Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada).

Job Requirements:
  • Registered, or immediately eligible for registration, as a Registered Professional Biologist (RPBio) with the BC College of Applied Biologists (CAB) within six (6) months of employment. Note: immediately eligible for registration is defined as being able to transfer a current membership from an applicable jurisdiction to CAB within six (6) months of employment. Confirmation of registration/eligibility is required before an offer of employment can be made.
  • PhD plus 1 year of related work experience* OR
  • Master's Degree plus 2 years of related work experience* OR
  • B.Sc. plus 3 years of related experience

*Related work experience includes all of the following:
  • Experience in conducting environmentally related research, monitoring, and assessments on Aquatic Species and ecosystems of conservation concern.
  • Experience interpreting and applying environmental management legislation, regulations and policies (e.g., Water Sustainability Act; Riparian Areas Protection Regulation; Riparian Management Practices).
  • Experience working in and with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience working simultaneously on multiple projects/initiatives.
  • Experience managing priorities.
  • Experience developing and submitting written and oral content (e.g. standards of practice, briefing notes, evaluation and/or feasibility reports, etc.) to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Experience communicating (written and oral) complex topics to various people who may or may not have the same level of knowledge/understanding/context
  • Experience in data management and analysis.
  • Experience building and maintaining relationships with internal and external stakeholders

Preference may be given to candidates with the following expertise and/or experience:
  • Two years or more research/applied science experience
  • Experience in developing and implementing Species at Risk (SAR) projects
  • Aquatic SAR expertise
  • Partnership collaborations with other governments (municipal, federal or FN)

About this Position:
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work from home a few days a week subject to an approved telework agreement.
