The Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship is accountable for integrated water, land and natural resource management and cross-sector legislation, policy, and objective setting for land and marine environments
The Biodiversity and Ecosystems Branch leads the development of strategic conservation policy, science, and assessments for species, ecosystems, and habitats. The Branch is responsible for developing strategic frameworks, standards, policies, legislation/regulation, and guidance for species, ecosystems and habitat and providing guidance for the conservation and recovery of ecosystems and biodiversity that guide the actions of the Natural Resource Sector (NRS). The Branch, in coordination with our partners, provides terrestrial conservation science leadership and expertise, as well as assessment and reporting on biodiversity and ecosystems.
This position supports the Ministry of Water, Lands, and Resource Stewardship in achieving timely and effective stewardship of biodiversity, old-growth, and wildlife habitat. The Biodiversity Specialist designs, implements, documents, and interprets robust analyses and ecological models to support government agencies, First Nations, industry partners and stakeholders in biodiversity stewardship and policy to further government’s environmental sustainability mandate. The position provides expert advice in the interpretation and implications of analysis results and associated uncertainties. The incumbent assists branch managers and directors to be strategic and develop proactive and creative ways for the province to address emerging issues in biodiversity, old growth forest, and wildlife habitat stewardship.

Job Requirements:

• Degree in biological sciences, natural resource conservation or management, including terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, conservation biology, fish or wildlife management, or forestry, or equivalent plus 3 years related experience; OR
• Master of Science in biological sciences, natural resource conservation or management, including terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, conservation biology, fish or wildlife management, or forestry with 2 years related experience; AND
• Registered as a Registered Professional Biologist (RP Bio) in B.C. or immediately eligible for registration. Note: immediately eligible for registration is defined as being able to transfer a current membership from an applicable Canadian jurisdiction.
• Experience developing, explaining and presenting findings, reports and summaries of technical results both verbally and in writing in a clear and concise style that is appropriate to the audience.
• Experience managing complex and sensitive natural resource management projects in a team environment with some demonstrated leadership experience.
Experience with ecological modeling languages that support open-source workflows (for example, C++, JAVA, SQL and R)

Preference may be given to applicants with any of the following:

• Experience providing advice to Executives or decision makers regarding policy development and resource stewardship, preferably in the natural resource sector.
• Experience with habitat inventory data, models, and field methodologies.
• Experience acquiring funding from multiple sources external and internal to government.
Experience working collaboratively with First Nations to develop technical information to support natural resource stewardship.

Proviso

• Must have and maintain a valid BC driver’s license.
• May undertake limited field work which may include the following: travel to remote areas by vehicle, boat, air, or foot, occasional overnight or limited duration stay in rough camp conditions, and outdoor work in all weather conditions.
