Your Opportunity

Stantec is looking to hire an individual for the role of Biophysical Co-op/Summer Student in our Edmonton, AB office. Your primary role will be to support the post-construction monitoring program at a solar energy facility in Edmonton. You will also be supporting a multi-disciplinary technical team across a variety of sectors. You will have the opportunity to gain experience in several disciplines within our environmental services group such as wildlife, vegetation, wetlands, as well as reclamation and remediation. You will also work directly with project management and technical discipline leads.

The position will extend from May 1 (start date negotiable) through November 15.

Key Responsibilities

  • Field based position
  • Post-construction monitoring for wildlife mortalities at a local solar energy project, with a commitment to complete the full season of monitoring (May through November 15)
  • Working in a collaborative team environment and under deadlines in wilderness and outdoor settings, and able to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Support a variety of biophysical field work

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Knowledge or interest in renewable energy projects and regulatory requirements (e.g., bat and bird migration, Post Construction Monitoring Programs) is an asset.
  • Detail-oriented, thorough, and accurate. Ability to maintain focus while searching for carcasses.
  • Ability to identify Alberta bird species (or willingness to learn)
  • Good driving record and valid Class 5 driver’s license required.
  • Able to lift 50lbs and endure long days of challenging field work while maintaining a positive, solutions-focused attitude.
  • Excellent navigational skills and ability to troubleshoot and solve problems in the field.
  • Able to thrive in a dynamic environment under deadlines.

Education and Experience

  • This opportunity is available for a co-op/summer student or a recent graduate from an environmental program who is eligible for funding programs through ECO Canada. There is potential for full time employment following the position end date.
  • Please include detailed information on field-based skills and any valid health and safety training certificates (e.g., first aid level C, auxiliary vehicles, etc.). Please state if you are currently enrolled in a co-op program.

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include remote work, long drives, 2 week away from home shifts (including evenings, weekends, and holidays), and exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
