The Office of the Lieutenant Governor and Government House (GH) itself is multi-dimensional, supporting several distinct lines of business including constitutional and international protocol matters, ceremonial and hospitality events, and the management and maintenance of Government House as a National Historic Site. The role of staff is to provide direct support to the Lieutenant Governor and to the senior management of GH; to maintain GH structures and grounds; and to carry out all obligations, events, and other activities in the highest standards of professionalism, observance of vice-regal protocols, and meeting the expectations of the people of British Columbia.

This positionreports to the Hospitality Services Manager, the Service Assistant is required to perform in-house and guest housekeeping duties, event set-ups and service including high-tea, plated dinners, buffet banquets, receptions and fine dining service for VIP luncheons, dinners, and private functions. The GH team hosts over 150 large scale functions per year which includes receptions and dinners for up to 300 guests and at times, up to 2,000 guests at indoor/outdoor public events. Due to the high-profile nature of GH events and participation by the Lieutenant Governor and the most senior levels of Provincial, Municipal and Federal government, it is expected that the GH Service Assistant will always demonstrate tact and diplomacy.

Job Requirements:
  • Secondary school graduation or equivalent.
  • A minimum of two (2) years experience in the food and beverage industry.
  • A minimum of two (2) years experience working in hospitality, housekeeping, catering, or other relevant service-related industries.

Preference may be given to applicants with:
  • Post-secondary education such as a certificate or higher in the hospitality industry. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Three (3) or more years of experience working in hospitality, housekeeping, catering, or other relevant service-related industries.
  • Experience leading an events team comprised of but not limited to servers, bartenders, dishwashers, and others.
  • Fine Dining Service experience.
  • Bartending experience.

Provisos /Willingness statements:
  • Standing/Walking (constantly): over and on various surfaces including carpet, tile, and rubber mats.
  • Crouching (occasionally): to lift trays, clean and stock shelves.
  • Kneeling/Crawling (occasionally): to clean or pick-up debris.
  • Stooping (frequently): to load carts and trays while serving food and beverages.
  • Twisting (constantly): to serve guests, monitor banquet room activity, maneuver through crowds.
  • Climbing (occasionally): up and down stairs and step ladders.
  • Balancing (constantly): to carry trays, glassware, and beverage containers.
  • Reaching Overhead/Extending (frequently): to stock supplies, carry trays, serve at arm's length extension, setting-up banquet tables.
  • Handling/Grasping (frequently): to fold napkins, lay cutlery, glassware, plating, etc.
  • Pushing/Pulling (frequently): to push carts, tables, glass, and fine-china carts. Average weight of 25lbs force, maximum weight 50lbs force.
  • Lifting/Carrying (frequently): tables, food trays, ice buckets. Average weight 25lbs, maximum weight 50lbs.
