Job Summary
Dalhousie Financial Services strives to provide the highest quality financial services and information and ensure the effective stewardship of University assets to the benefit of students and scholarly activities. Financial Services is a core service unit of the University, providing services in areas of financial accounting, budgeting, procurement and risk management, cash management, and financial systems and policies. Reporting to the Associate Director, Finance Operations, the Capital Assets Analyst is a key resource in the monitoring, accounting for, and reporting on Dalhousie’s capital assets, providing accounting and analysis related to acquisition, disposal, amortization of, and tax treatment for assets, as well as key activities that support the general accounting processes for the University.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain Dalhousie’s Capital Assets listing, including accounting for acquisitions, disposals, and transfers.
  • Coordinate the annual Capital Asset inventory review process with key campus contacts. Compile working papers and reconciliations for Capital Asset inventory reporting and for Deferred Capital Contributions. Calculate amortization, provisions for pending disposals, and other adjustments.
  • Enhance process documentation for clarity, completeness, and current practice. Identify control or process weaknesses, and streamlining and automation opportunities, and propose options for resolution. Communicate and collaborate on process improvement projects.
  • Maintain files regarding the Section 211 elections for supplies of Real Property to minimize Excise Tax impacts. Compile working papers for capital project expenditures, calculate potential tax recoveries. Maintain historical records. Prepare CRA filings as required.
  • Support financial accounting processes by reconciling and resolving account balance and GL transaction issues. Work with stakeholders to resolve issues and make corrections. Create journal entries to correct errors as required.
  • Maintain Ellucian Banner Chart of Accounts elements related to Capital Assets.

Note
The successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in-person work on campus and remote work) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines.

Required Qualifications
  • Undergraduate Degree in Commerce or Business Administration with concentration in accounting plus approximately five years related work experience of progressive complexity (or equivalent combination of training and experience).
  • Demonstrated proficiency with enterprise resource planning systems processing large volumes of data.
  • Advanced MSOffice suite skills including exceptional Excel abilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle complex and confidential matters with excellent judgment, discretion, and tact.
  • Strong analytical skills, attention to detail and multi-tasking in a high-volume, quick turnaround, deadline driven environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication (verbal and written) skills.
