Career Navigator

General Description:
The Mi’kmaw Economic Benefits Office (MEBO), Mi’kmaw Kina’matnewey (MK), Nova Scotia Career
Development Association (NSCDA) has partnered with Nova Scotia Department of Labour Skills &
Immigration (LSI) to assist MK schools in understanding and preparing for the needs of the province’s job market. This partnership will support services not offered in the current grades 9-12 system and connect to the resources that can be offered regarding employment counseling, training, and employment. This position will support students in grades 9-12 and their families in exploring career options, understanding Nova Scotia’s labour market information and how these connect to school choices.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and enhance relationships with education (secondary and post-secondary), community organizations, service providers, employers/industry partners and other referral agencies. o Identify services and tools needed to support students and labour market connections. o During the school day, plan promote or deliver career supports and stakeholder engagement in consultation with school administration and other related school personnel (guidance counselor, teachers, etc.). o Additional offerings may take place offsite and outside school hours. o Gather and disseminate current and relevant career and Labor Market Information

(LMI) to stakeholders. o Determine the degree to which tools, information and available resources reflect the needs of community organizations, service providers, employers/industry partners.

  • Assist students in accessing resources and information required to achieve career goals. o Promote and deliver Let’s Talk Careers at the High School level. o In consultation with administrators and school personnel, provide individualized and/or group career support to students and families. o Use approved educational software platforms to navigate labour market information, employment opportunities and to explore required workplace expectations.
  • Access and implement tools to measure success of Career Navigator supports and outreach. o Working collaboratively with MEBO, MK, NSCDA and LSI to make recommendations related to ongoing implementation and expansion of the role.
  • Other duties as reasonably required or assigned by Directors; may include but not limited to report/memo writing, presentations, and/or special projects.

Qualifications and Education:

  • Post Secondary Education and/or experience in the employment and training or related field,

Human Resource, Youth Programming, or business administration.

  • Proficient with Email, Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous and/or Mi’kmaw communities/organizations/languages.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license & reliable vehicle with automobile insurance.
  • A satisfactory criminal records and vulnerable sector check is required. Having a criminal record is not a determinate factor.

Please note: If you are the successful candidate and do not hold a Certified Career Development
Practitioner (CCDP) designation, you will have the opportunity to enroll in this program and obtain your designation while you work. In addition, Career Navigators will be able to participate in professional Case Management Training provided by the Nova Scotia Career Development
Association (NSCDA).

Working Conditions:

  • Normal work week is 35 hours/week, 7 hours/day; work outside of normal business hours may be required.
  • Work is completed in a comfortable office environment with an extensive amount of time sitting at a desk and using a computer.
  • Work will include regular communication and engagement with youth.
  • May be required to lift or move large binders, files, boxes, etc.
