Job description

CELLBLOCK MONITOR

The Owen Sound Police Service requires a Cell Block Monitor, who will be responsible for monitoring and safeguarding all persons in custody with the Owen Sound Police Service. When not monitoring prisoners, this position will also be responsible for Criminal Record Verifications utilizing the Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) and local Records Management Systems. This is a part-time position with varying hours up to thirty-six (36) per week, working both day and night shifts.

To be considered for this position, the applicant must possess the following minimum requirements;

  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Valid “G” driver’s license
  • Able to work 12-hour shifts, both day and night shifts.
  • 18 years of age or older
  • Valid level one First Aid Certificate with Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (most hold qualification upon offer of employment)
  • Able to manipulate/lift up to 10 kgs
  • Computer and accurate keyboarding skills, with working knowledge of Internet and Microsoft Office applications
  • WHMIS qualification an asset
  • Must be self-motivated and work well with co-workers
  • Ability to recognize priorities.
  • Proven accurate alpha and numeric data entry
  • Effective decision-making abilities
  • Ability to complete a multitude of tasks simultaneously
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal and communication skills with multiple levels and sources for listening and comprehension
  • Ability to manage tasks that are straightforward and repetitive with some variety (numerous established procedures) to ensure smooth workflow. Decisions related to sequence and prioritizing, ex, verifying out-of-date or incomplete database entries, checking source data and clarifying information.

RESPONSIBILITIES

· Monitor all prisoners to ensure their security and well-being

· Observe and perform visual checks on prisoners on a frequent and regular basis

· Maintain Cell Block security, ensuring all areas remain locked at all times

· Organize and distribute meals, record prisoner activity, and maintain a prisoner activity log book

· Record and report any damages or repairs to cells

· Conduct searches of cells before occupation and when cells are vacated

· Ensure all personal effects removed from prisoners are adequately secured and recorded

· Ensure that prisoners receive their prescription medication as required, under the supervision of the Sergeant on Duty

· Monitor fire safety and be familiar with fire general orders

· Prepare reports or statements upon request

· Process criminal record verifications and other police information searches as required as per the Memorandum of Understanding with Owen Sound Police Service and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police

· Ability to review information obtained from CPIC and local police information databases and to make an informed and support a decision on the result

· Must achieve the minimum standard verifications per shift while maintaining a high accuracy rate.

· Maintain related administrative paperwork as required.

The salary range for this position is $19.23-$21.369 per hour.

Successful candidates will be subject to a comprehensive background check and must complete training provided by the Owen Sound Police Service.
